GOLDEN, Colo. – The #8-ranked Colorado School of Mines Men's Soccer team dropped a back-and-forth affair with St. Mary's (2-0) Sunday as the Orediggers (1-1) fell 4-2 at Stermole Stadium.
Mines' bench provided the scoring for the home team as
Tristan Semelsberger and
Matthew Summerfield each tallied their first goals of the season.
Jason Zobott and
Ford Edwards checked in on the assists. Edwards helped out Semelsberger while Zobott's head accounted for the assist on Summerfield's goal.
As a team, the Orediggers outshot St. Mary's 20-13 with nine shots on goal. The Rattlers only put six attempts on frame, but converted at a rate of 66 percent.
John Haist and Edwards accounted for eight of Mines' 20 attempts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rattlers had a terrific start to the game with a period of sustained pressure that resulted in the opening goal. Pato Botello Faz rang the far post with a hard shot, but Luis Sanchez was there to clean it up for a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.
Mines responded strongly and dominated the final half hour of the first half with two goals. Semelsberger leveled the game in the 28th minute with a high shot from Edwards' assist, and Summerfield made it 2-1 in the 39th minute as he one-timed a rebounded Zobott shot.
St. Mary's wasted little time getting the lead back as Sanchez and Botello Faz again linked up for two quick second-half goals. The first was created by Sanchez, who crossed from the left for Botello Faz to deflect in from close range at 53:33; the second came as Sanchez got the last touch on a loose ball in the box that came from Botello Faz at 58:06.
Botello Faz scored again in the 64th minute with a low slot to the far post off Carlos Blasco's pass to lead 4-2.
