GOLDEN, Colo. - The trio of
Anderson Salisbury,
Brandon Saunders, and
Jake Woods led a successful day for Colorado School of Mines wrestling at the 2019 Rocky Mountain Collegiate Open.
Saunders won the 285-pound bracket, Salisbury was co-champion at 184, and Woods qualified for the 133 final in Mines' regular-season-ending home tournament at Steinhauer Fieldhouse.
Saunders, a senior, had an impressive 3-0 tournament to win at heavyweight. He earned a pair of falls to start his day, beating Eli Hinojosa in 4:24 and Christian Robb of Western Colorado in 2:00, before matching up with Western's Kris Davis in the final. After leading 1-0 on an escape, Davis reversed Saunders in the second period, but Saunders returned the favor from the bottom position in the third and then rode out to win 3-2.
Salisbury went 3-0 with bonus points in all of his matches to make it to the 184 final. He majored Terry Winstead 16-2 in the first round, then earned a 17-0 tech fall against Adams State's Cole Gustavson and a 13-5 major over Garrett Niel of Air Force Prep in the semis. He matched up with
Perry Rodenbeck in the final, which was not wrestled by mutual agreement.
Woods picked up two good wins to run to the 133 final, pinning Reuben Arredondo of Northwest Tech in 1:11 to start his tournament, then beating Conrad Cole of Fort Hays State 9-3 in the semis. Woods forfeited the final against Northeastern JC's Collin Metzgar.
Elsewhere on the mat,
Jake Stogdill took fourth at 125 pounds with a 3-2 day. Stogdill had two pins on the day, both over Clayton Vickers, before running up against Josiah Nava of Utah Valley in the third-place bout, a 17-0 tech fall.
Drew Hinkle went 2-2 with an appearance in the consolation semis, earning a major decision and a pin to advance to the 174 semis before falling into wrestlebacks.
Ben Krantz had a 2-2 day, including wins over Zach Wortkoet of Adams State, 13-5, and a 7-0 decision against Johnathan Fanfan of Northwest Tech at 174.
Noah Au-Yeung (141) and
Nolan Funk (197) suffered 0-2 days.
The tournament ended Mines' regular season; the Orediggers will compete next at NCAA Super Regionals on Feb. 23 in Kearney, Neb.
