#14/17 Mines Survives vs. UCCS On Senior Night

GOLDEN, Colo. - Mason Baker's career-high 32 points, including the game-winning free throw with 3.0 seconds remaining, helped #14/17 Colorado School of Mines survive UCCS in an 81-80 win on Senior Night.

The Orediggers wrapped up the regular season 24-4 overall and 21-1 in RMAC play. They will head into the RMAC Tournament as the #1 seed and will host Adams State Tuesday at 8 p.m. in a quarterfinal.

Baker was simply superb, hitting 9-of-14 shots and going 11-for-13 from the line to set his new career high. On Senior Night, Luke Golter went for nine points and six rebounds, Ben Sonnefeld tied his career high with nine assists, and Ben Clare scored 13 to go with five rebounds. Mines' senior class won their 100th game with the victory.

Blend Avdili led UCCS with 26 points off the bench as he was a red-hot 6-for-7 from beyond the arc. DaRaun Clark was the only other Mountain Lion in double figures with 12.

In one of the most dramatic finishes to a game this season, Mines and UCCS went back-and-forth in the closing minutes before Baker won it with his play at both ends of the court. Tied 73-73 with 2:47 remaining, the two teams traded foul shots to get to 75-75 before Golter tipped in a missed shot to lead with 1:39 to go. Both teams missed opportunities before Elijah Ross' free throws tied the game 77-77 with 43 ticks left; Sonnefeld then hit a mid-range jumper with 22 seconds to go to re-establish Mines' lead.

With the last shot to tie or win the game, UCCS instead turned the ball over as Baker drew a charge against Ross, and after Clare was intentionally fouled, he made one of two to lead 80-77. Avdili hit a game-tying three-pointer at the other end, however, to again knot the game at 80-80 with 3.0 seconds left; needing to hold Mines without a last shot, UCCS instead committed a foul before the inbound occured, sending Baker to the line. The redshirt sophomore calmly swished the first shot for the lead, then smartly bounced the second off the front of the rim to start the clock and deny UCCS a look at the final shot.
