AUSTIN, Texas - Karolina Sidebaeck's golden goal was the difference as #7 Colorado School of Mines escaped St. Edward's with a 1-0 road win.
Sidebaeck, a freshman, connected on a header from
Emma Peterson's free kick 7:30 into the first overtime to push the Orediggers (3-0-0) past the Hilltoppers (1-2-0) after outshooting the hosts 24-14.
Shannon Mooney was outstanding in net, making five saves to pick up her second consecutive clean sheet.
The Orediggers outshot SEU 19-13 in regulation and 13-5 in the second half, but couldn't find a goal despite several good chances. St. Edward's had the better run of play in the first 20 minutes, but the Orediggers slowly came around and peppered chances on net around halftime, including a pair of
Emi Higgins shots that went just wide. SEU goalkeeper Annabel Sweeney made eight saves to deny Mines a winner late in regulation.
In overtime,
Chaney Brugman and Sidebaeck had early chances go wide, as did SEU when Caroline Kirschner's header was off target.
Audrey Shin hit the crossbar 6:56 into the extra period, but the one chance Mines needed came thanks to a yellow card on SEU's Kaitlin Moore with 2:30 left to play. The foul gave Peterson a dangerous free kick opportunity to the right of goal, and Sidebaeck slipped behind the defense and glanced the header off Sweeney's gloves for the goal.
