GOLDEN, Colo. - Regis came out on top of a back-and-forth battle against Colorado School of Mines in Tuesday's RMAC opener at Lockridge Arena, 66-62.
The Orediggers (2-3, 0-1 RMAC) received big games from
Ben Boone and
Brendan Sullivan, but the streaking Rangers (6-1, 1-0 RMAC) won their sixth straight with two consecutive baskets in the final minute.
The game featured seven lead changes and nine ties. Boone drained five three pointers on the way to 21 points while Sullivan notched a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds.
Kai Barr, despite being saddled by foul trouble limiting him to 19 minutes, had nine points and four rebounds.
RU was led by Brian Dawson's 14 points before he was ejected on a flagrant foul with 1:27 remaining. Will Cranston-Lown had 12 points, six boards, and five assists.
Tied 30-30 at halftime, Mines led by as much as seven in the second half when Boone's three-pointer at the 10:57 mark put them ahead 43-36. Regis chipped away over the next few minutes, drawing within a basket twice on Cranston-Lown buckets before Sullivan's layup make with 5:52 remaining extended Mines' lead back to four, 57-53.
Two free throws and then a three-pointer by Ilisia Washington erased the advantage and put RU on top for the first time in the half with 5:10 to go, and after a Kevin Ebiriekwe jumper with 2:32 to go made it 62-59, Barr went to the line after Dawson's flagrant foul in transition and made one of two shots with 1:27 left. That made it 62-60 RU, and with the ball possession, Sullivan hit a shot to tie it at 62 with 1:16 remaining.
That would end up being Mines' final points as Eddy Egun made his shot at the other end, and Cranston-Lown's steal and fastbreak layup sealed it with 19 seconds left.
