Weyer’s Gem Delivers Doubleheader, Series Split at CCU

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Oredigger redshirt junior Brayden Weyer tossed another complete-game victory on Saturday to help the Colorado School of Mines Baseball team split the doubleheader and the series against Colorado Christian at All Star Park.

The final score of Weyer's (2-1) game-one start was 6-2 as the Erie, Colo., native tossed 7.0 innings of two-run, five-hit baseball. Only one of the runs was earned and the seven-foot righty struck out nine batters. Game two was an extra-innings thriller that went to CCU by a score of 4-3 after eight frames. Luke Folsom (0-1) started on the mound but did not factor in the decision. Rodney Gregg took the loss for the Orediggers.

On offense, Jason Hall led the charge in game one as he touted a 2-for-2 day including one home run and three RBI. Caden Bonds also notched a hit and scored two runs in the front end of the doubleheader. Game two featured I-Ly Hsue going 3-for-4 in the leadoff spot while scoring once and notching one RBI. Danny McDermott was 1-for-3 with a double and a RBI.

Mines (4-16, 4-16 RMAC) earned its first series split of the season thanks to its win in game one of the doubleheader. The Oredigger pitching staff combined to strike out 12 batters through two games and surrendered just five earned runs over the course of 15 innings. Colorado Christian (7-12, 6-10 RMAC) saw reliver JC Watne improve to 3-0 on the season with his appearance in game two. The Cougars totaled 16 hits including two home runs. Mines racked up 17 hits including one home run and one double.

GAME ONE: Mines 6, Colorado Christian 2
The Orediggers scored early and often to start the day. McDermott drove in Scoles in the opening frame for a 1-0 lead. Hall followed up with a two-run home run in the second inning after a walk to Bonds. That made the score 3-1 after two innings with CCU's unearned run in the bottom of the first. Weyer road that momentum to six strikeouts over the next four innings. His pitching and Mines' defense did not allow a Cougar runner to second base until the fifth frame. The visitors racked up three more runs in the fourth thanks to four consecutive hits at the start of the frame. The home team added one more run in the bottom of the seventh, but it was too little too late as Weyer ended the game with his ninth strikeout of the day.

GAME TWO: Colorado Christian 4, Mines 3 (8 innings)
Consecutive goose eggs for both teams highlighted the start of game two. The contest settled into a pitchers' duel with CCU striking first courtesy of a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning. Mines quickly responded in the top of the fourth thanks to two-out singles from Hsue and Toby Scoles. The Orediggers road that 2-1 lead into the top of the seventh and expanded it to 3-1 there on McDermott's two-out double. However, the tides turned with the Cougars' two-run home run in the bottom of the final scheduled frame. Bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth proved too much for Mines to overcome and CCU walked off with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
