PUEBLO, Colo. –
Mason Andrews and
Caden Bonds pushed the Orediggers to a ninth-inning lead on Sunday afternoon, but the Colorado School of Mines Baseball team suffered a 7-5, walk-off loss at the hands of CSU Pueblo as the ThunderWolves claimed the series at Rawlings Field.
Andrews' ninth-inning dinger gave him a 2-for-3 day at the plate with one run and one RBI.
Caden Bonds was also big, going long to score run one and notch two RBI on two hits.
I-Ly Hsue finished 2-for-5 and scored one run.
Wayne Moeck's resume featured one run on two hits including a double.
Toby Scoles came off the bench and went 1-for-2 while recording an RBI. Meanwhile, on the mound,
Luke Folsom started but did not factor in the decision as he was relieved and took over as designated hitter.
Zachary Kriethe (1-2) took the loss in relief.
Brayden Weyer,
Blake Ripp,
Marcus Lee and
Rodney Gregg came out of the bullpen as well. That quartet allowed just one unearned run and stuck out five batters through 5.1 innings.
With the loss, Mines (15-9, 4-8 RMAC) drops its second series in conference play. The win keeps CSU Pueblo (16-10, 9-3 RMAC) tied for first in the league standings after Colorado Mesa dropped its series finale with UCCS. The Orediggers hit over .289 as a team, but left 12 runners on base in the loss. The ThunderWolves earned the victory behind five hits for extra bases despite leaving nine runners on base. All five of Mines' runs counted against "The Pack's" ERA. One of CSU Pueblo's seven runs were unearned after the Orediggers committed two errors in the field. Mines' pitching staff combined to strike out seven batters compared to six strikeouts for the ThunderWolves' hurlers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Just like every other game of the series, Mines scored the first run of the game and it came in the very first inning. Hsue led off with a single directly up the middle and over second base,
Mason Andrews was hit by a pitch and Folsom strode to the box and drove Hsue in with a single to right field for a 1-0 lead. Not long after, Folsom stepped to the mound and worked through two singles for a scoreless bottom half of the inning to maintain the Orediggers' 1-0 advantage. CSU Pueblo countered in the bottom of the second with three runs on a double, triple and wild pitch. Weyer came in from the bullpen to get the final out, and after two innings of action, "The Pack" owned a 3-1 lead.
Mines and Pueblo traded runs in the fourth frame thanks to Bonds' leadoff home run before an Oredigger error allowed an unearned plating for the ThunderWolves. The fifth and sixth both brought about stacked zeroes on the scoreboard. Then, Scoles drove in Folsom to make it 4-3 in the top of the seventh and Lee, Gregg and the visiting defense tossed up a shutout frame in the bottom of the seventh. Mines struck again in the top of the ninth, using Andrews' home run and Bonds' RBI-single scoring Moeck to take a 5-4 lead. However, "The Pack" tied it with a RBI-triple in their last half before walking it off on a two-run home run for a 7-5 final and the series win.
