GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines used four bonus-point victories to secure a thrilling come-from-behind win against #23 Western Colorado, 22-20, at Volk Gym.
The Orediggers (10-1, 4-1 RMAC) stayed alive in their quest for a share of the RMAC title but had to work in the late bouts to do it, getting
Ryan Cody's technical fall and an
Anderson Salisbury pin to take the lead after being down 17-12 through seven.
Western took an early lead as Patrick Allis outlasted
Christian Lopez 4-2 at 125 pounds, but Mines got back-to-back pins from
Weston DiBlasi and #9
Grayston DiBlasi at 133 and 141, respectively, to take an 11-3 lead, with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty costing Mines a point.
#4 Jason Hanenberg won 11-2 over
Teague Dilbeck at 149, but a key challenge by Mines head coach
Austin DeVoe would prove to be pivotal in the final dual result. Hanenberg took down and pinned Dilbeck in the second period, but the takedown was challenged and overturned for an illegal chokehold, restarting the match; Dilbeck then lost by major decision, and that two-point difference between it and a pin was the final margin of victory.Â
The Mountaineers came back and built their lead on four straight victories as Ryan Wilson won 4-1 over
Daniel Caddy at 157, Hunter Mullin won 8-3 against
Jack Damenti at 165, and Cole Hernandez won a high-scoring 174-pound bout 17-9 over
Levi Farris.
That made it 17-12 for the visitors, but
Ryan Cody dominated at 184 to earn an 18-3 technical fall over Hayden Johnson, and Salisbury needed just 1:56 to pin Parker Gasser and take a 22-17 lead. That meant Western needed a pin at heavyweight to win, but Zach Schraeder managed only a 5-3 decision against an attacking
Deandre Rucker.
