KEARNEY, Neb. -
Cody Thompson captured the Elite 149-pound championship to lead five placewinners for Colorado School of Mines at the Younes Hospitality Open on Saturday.
At the biggest single-day tournament in the nation, Thompson went 5-0 to win the competitive Elite 149 bracket, while #10
Grayston DiBlasi placed fifth at Elite 141 and
Tristin David was fourth at Elite 165. In the Amateur brackets,
Trebor Moreno placed sixth at 133 pounds, and
Wyatt Reisz ended on a win to be third at 174 pounds.
Thompson wrestled a tough tournament to win his weight class, culminating with an overtime decision over #12 John Burger of Nebraska-Kearney in the final that saw Thompson take down Burger into a nearfall in sudden victory to win 13-6. Thompson was 5-0 with a fall, a major decision, and three decision victories to win his first career tournament.
DiBlasi went 5-2 at 141 pounds, with his only two losses coming to D-I competition. DiBlasi racked up two majors and three decision victories. David had one of the best performances of his career at 165 making the championship semifinals before ultimately placing fourth; he was 3-2 on the day to tie his best-ever career tournament finish.
In other Elite weight classes,
Jaron Mahler was 3-2 and
Daniel Caddy 0-2 at 157;
Jakob Smith went 1-2 and
Grant Crownhart 0-2 at 165;
Mason Diel went 3-2 with a pair of falls,
Levi Farris was 1-2, and
Garrett Bakarich was 0-2 at 184; and
Deandre Rucker finished 1-2 at 197 pounds.Â
In the Amateur ranks, Moreno had a busy day going 5-1 before running up against his six-match limit to ultimately place sixth in his first collegiate tournament. Two of his wins came by fall as the true freshman improved to 6-1 on the season. Reisz got into the semifinals with two falls and two tech falls before losing 2-1 in a sudden-victory decision; he bounced back in the third-place bout to win by technical fall to finish 5-1. Although he didn't place due to hitting his match limit,
Cade Whish buzzsawed through the consolation bracket at 285 after an early loss, going 5-1 on the day including three pins. Whish is now a team-best 9-3 this season.
At 149 pounds,
Niko Mayo went 1-2 and
Carson Dulitz was 2-2;
Avery Krippner joined Reisz at 174 and was 1-2;
Jeffery Morosini went 1-2 at 197; and at 285,
Laith Ibrahim went 2-2 with a fall and
Charlie Holub was 0-2.
Mines will return to action Nov. 30 hosting New Mexico Highlands at 6 p.m.
