IT'S THE TYR INVITE
The first of three giant events for the Colorado School of Mines Men's and Women's Swimming teams has arrived. It's the 2024 TYR/CMU Invitational hosted by Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction, Colo. The four-day, championship-style meet runs Wednesday night through Saturday afternoon and historically yields program records and NCAA qualifying times for Mines. As the Orediggers make their 13th appearance at the mainstay in their schedule, they'll look to continue tradition and produce a historic week of racing.

LIVE COVERAGE
All four days and all seven sessions of racing will be streamed live and for free on the RMAC Network. There will be live results as well.

THE FORMAT
This week's TYR/CMU Invitational will be held and scored in a championship format. Action begins Wednesday night at 6 p.m. with three timed finals in the 200-medley relay, 1000-free, and 800-freestyle relay. The following three days will feature preliminary races in the morning starting at 10 a.m., and finals in the evening at 5 p.m. Saturday finals will go off at 4 p.m. There will be no diving in the 2024 edition of the invite. In order to score for their team, individual swimmers must advance to the evening finals. The top eight from prelims will swim in an "A" final. The next eight will race in a "B" final. Point values from first place to 16th place are 20-17-16-15-14-13-12-11-9-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 for individual races. Relays are all timed finals. Those also score 1-16 with values of 40-34-32-30-28-26-24-22-18-14-12-10-8-6-4-2. After being established last season, the addition of unscored "C" finals will continue in 2024.

DAY-BY-DAY BREAKDOWN
As stated above, Wednesday's races include the 200-medley relay, 1000-free, and 800-freestyle. Thursday's slate features the 500-free, 200-IM, 50-free, and 200-freestyle relay. Friday brings on the 100-fly, 400-IM, 200-free, 100-breast, 100-back, and 400-medley relay. On the last day of swimming, fans will see the 200-back, 100-free, 200-breast, 200-fly, 1650-free, and 400-freestyle relay.

GUEST LIST
Colorado School of Mines, Colorado Mesa, NCAA Division I Utah, and NCAA Division I Wyoming will have their men's and women's teams in attendance in Grand Junction, Colo. Additionally, NCAA Division I Northern Arizona will have its women's team racing as well. It is notable that the host Mavericks are ranked #6 in the nation in both the men's and women's CSCAA polls.

STRONG START
Mines' men and women have both posted strong starts to their respective dual seasons. While duals are less about the final score and more about the race against the clock, the Orediggers' results are still an early sign of a strong squad. Overall, the women are 3-1.  They dropped their season opener in Golden to NCAA Division I New Mexico State by a score of 152-103. Since then, the Oredigger women have easily handled Adams State twice (148-30, 143-41) and CSU Pueblo (137-58). Mines' men also took two from ASU by scores of 150-33 and 161-34 before taking down Colorado College, 146-77, in Colorado Springs.

NEW MAN ON DECK
Noah Hensley joined the Mines swimming staff over the summer as the second fulltime assistant coach in program history. Hensley brings nearly a decade of experience as a student-athlete and coach at the collegiate level. Most recently, the four-time NCAA All-American was the associate head coach for the men's and women's swimming & diving teams at NCAA Division I Miami University of Ohio. His resume also includes stops at IU Indianapolis (formerly IUPUI) and North Carolina State University where he also competed as a student-athlete. Fans can check out Hensley's full profile HERE.

ADDITIONAL ADDITIONS
Head Coach Claire McDaniel enhanced her staff further by hiring assistant coach Jackie Mudd and graduate assistant Colin Fenster. Mudd comes to Mines after competing collegiately at Biola University in California. She's originally from Littleton, Colo., and graduated from Columbine High School. Fenster was a student-athlete at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. That duo, combined with the aforementioned Hensley, join veteran assistant Andy Foley to round out the entire Oredigger staff led by McDaniel.

AT THE HELM
Colorado School of Mines Swimming Head Coach Claire McDaniel is in her sixth season at the helm for the Oredigger men and women. McDaniel won her third RMAC Coach of the Year on the men's side after guiding the Orediggers to team silver at the 2023-24 RMAC Swimming & Diving Championships. She also owns three RMAC Coach of the Year awards on the men's side. Through five seasons, McDaniel has coached five RMAC Swimmers of the Year, four RMAC Freshmen of the Year, and 25 all-American performances including 21 individual events and four relays.

UP NEXT
After a big week in Grand Junction, Colo., the Oredigger men and women will take a month off from competition before returning to action on Friday, Jan. 3, at the University of Denver. A full preview of the dual will be available after the holiday break.
