#18 Mines Finishes Seventh At Midwest Classic

- #18 Colorado School of Mines had five placewinners on their way to a seventh-place team finish at the 45th Midwest Classic at UIndy.

In a field that included 19 ranked in the latest NWCA top-25, Mines finished an impressive seventh with 77.5 team points. Wisconsin-Parkside won the tournament with 147. 

#7 Grayston DiBlasi led the way placing fourth at 141 pounds, going 3-2 on a day in which all of his opponents ranked in the NWCA top 10. Both of his losses came to #4 Ronan Schuelke of McKendree, 5-3 in the quarterfinals and then 8-0 in the third-place match; in between, DiBlasi had an impressive run, beating UNC Pembroke's #10 Avery Buonocore 6-4, Lander's #6 Isham Peace 13-3, and Central Oklahoma's #2 Dylan Lucas 10-4.

#1 Cody Thompson was the lone Oredigger to advance to the championship semifinals, beating Gannon's Kenny Kiser 10-5, but suffered an injury default in the semis to #5 Dean Noble of Western Colorado. Thompson ended up sixth at 149 pounds.

Freshman Marcus Caro announced his arrival on the national scene with a seventh-place finish at 157, ending on a win as he was 4-2 overall in the tournament. Caro lost 3-2 in the quarterfinals but bounced back to beat Southwest Minnesota State's Sean Howk 4-2 in the consolation bracket; he fell 8-0 to UW-Parkside's Ben Durocher, but finished with a 5-0 win over Pitt-Johnstown's Cooper Warshel in the seventh-place bout.

#15 Wyatt Reisz was also seventh at 174, going 3-1 on the day and 6-2 for the tournament. Reisz beat #13 Clint Morisette of King 10-3 before a 5-2 setback to Gannon's Patrick Johnson; in the seventh-place bout, Reisz cruised 17-5 over Jakob Hurley of Tiffin. 

Ryan Cody ended up eighth at 197 pounds, going 1-3 on the day. Cody suffered a first-period fall against #10 John Parker of Newberry in the quarterfinals, but pinned #13 Emmanuel Skillings in just 25 seconds in his consolation-bracket opener; he then lost to UW-Parkside's Chase Stegall 4-0, and in the seventh-place match was caught in a late first-period pin by Mesa's Gabriel Carranza.

Christian Lopez was 1-1 on the day at 125 pounds, beating Logan Sallot of Gannon 1-0 in a defensive battle before bowing out on a 5-4 heartbreaker to #7 Dayson Torgerson of Colorado Mesa. At 133, Trebor Moreno beat Newman's Jevin Foust 11-0 to start his day before falling 8-1 to Central Missouri's James Wright to end his tournament. Laith Ibrahim ended his tournament with a 14-1 loss to #12 Layton Schmick of East Stroudsburg, going 3-2 on the weekend at heavyweight.

Mines returns to action after the holidays, hosting the Jack Hancock Duals at Volk Gym on Jan. 4.
