SCHEDULE UPDATE
Due to travel complications presented by the arctic front moving across Colorado this weekend, the dual between Mines and Wyoming has been moved to Monday, Jan. 20, at 11 a.m. inside the Mines Natatorium. In order to respect travel arrangements for Oredigger families, Senior Day festivities will still take place on Saturday. Senior recognition begins at 10:40 a.m. in the Mines Natatorium. An intrasquad meet will start at 11 a.m. on Saturday. A minimalist live stream of the festivities and intrasquad racing will still be offered on the RMAC Network.

LOOKING BACK
Last weekend, the Oredigger men and women traveled to the U.S. Air Force Academy just north of Colorado Springs. Mines' men went head-to-head with the Falcons and the women competed in a quad featuring Air Force, Northern Colorado, and University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). The men dropped their dual by a score of 167-94. The final tallies for the Oredigger women had the Falcons and Bears winning by scores of 239-54 and 225-68, respectively. However, Mines did knock off UTRGV, 190-87. Individually, Julie Gill stood out for the women as their top scorer. She raced to silver in the 1000-free and bronze in the 500-free. On the men's side, Jakson Winn wasn't just the high point scorer for the Oredigger, he led all swimmers in the meet. Winn grabbed gold in the 100-back, 100-free, and as part of the 400-freestyle relay. Additionally, Vladislav Kazakin earned silver in the 100-free, Luca Burns won silver in the 100-back, Jaron O'Grady won silver in the 200-fly, Michael Kietzman claimed gold in the 50-free and silver in the 100-free, and Ronan Lauinger won silver in the 200-IM. Kietzman, Sawyer Jones, and Kazakin were the other three legs of the winning 400-freestyle relay.

CELEBRATE THE SENIORS
The 2024-25 senior class for Mines swimming features 12 outstanding student-athletes. Isabella Bono, Sophia Buhr, Kerrigan Hemp, Olivia Kisow, and Maggie Wells will represent the Oredigger women in the pre-meet celebration. Jack Engler, Gavin Gilmore, Michael Kietzman, Ronan Lauinger, Jaron O'Grady, Andres Saa, and Max Waring are the "guests" of honor for the men. Overall, the group represents multiple runner-up team finishes at the RMAC Swimming & Diving Championships, multiple appearances and team scoring at the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships, and numerous All-RMAC finishes over the last three years. Each senior will have an individualized tribute read aloud during the pre-meet festivities. A brief profile of each senior can be found below.

ISABELLA BONO
For her career, Bono has recorded multiple NCAA "B" qualifying times across four events including the 500-free, 1000-free, 1650-free, and 400-IM. She also boasts podium appearances each year of her career at the conference championships including Second-Team All-RMAC in the 1650-free (2) and 200-fly. Bono was named CSCAA Second-Team Scholar All-America as a sophomore and junior as well.

SOPHIA BUHR
Currently ranked top-100 in NCAA Division II for the 100-fly and 200-fly, she has tallied team points for Mines at the RMAC Championships all three years. Those points include scoring swims in the 100-fly, 200-fly, 200-IM, and 400-IM. She was Second-Team All-RMAC as a true freshman on the 200-medley relay. Buhr also ranked top-50 in the nation in the 50 fly as a freshman and sophomore while finishing her junior season top-100 in the 100-IM.

KERRIGAN HEMP
During her time at Mines, Hemp has broken four program records including the 100-back, 200-back, and legs on both medley relays. She is a three-time First-Team All-RMAC swimmer and owns two Second-Team All-RMAC finishes. Most impressive for Hemp are two CSCAA Second-Team All-America honors as part of the 400-medley relay in 2023 and 2024.

OLIVIA KISOW
Kisow started her collegiate career as the 2022 RMAC Freshman of the Year. As a sophomore, she qualified for the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships as part of the 800-freestyle relay. Overall, Kisow is a First-Team All-RMAC swimmer who also boasts four Second-Team All-RMAC finishes at the conference races. She has also ranked top-100 in the nation in multiple events and the end of multiples seasons.

MAGGIE WELLS
As a freshman, Wells recorded First-Team All-RMAC finishes as part of the 200-freestyle and 400-freestyle relays and Second-Team All-RMAC on the 800-freestyle relay. She went on to collect two more Second-Team All-RMAC awards in the next two seasons while ranking top-100 in the nation in the 200-free and 1000-free as a junior. Earlier this season, Wells was a part of the 400-freestyle relay that broke the program record at the midseason invite in Grand Junction, Colo.

JACK ENGLER
Engler has earned four Second-Team All-RMAC awards including two all-conference swims in the 400-medley relay, another as part of the 400-freestyle relay, and a fourth-place finish in the 200-breast as a sophomore. His role on the 400-medley relay at the 2024 RMAC Championships resulted in a program record. Through his career, Engler has ranked top-100 in the nation in multiple events and rose as high as 36th in the nation in the 50-breast as a junior.

GAVIN GILMORE
During his time at Mines, Gilmore has scored points in each of his appearances at the RMAC Swimming and Diving Championships. His highest finish at the conference races was sixth in the 100-breast in 2023. Gilmore's combined work in the classroom and in the pool led to CSCAA Second-Team Scholar All-America distinction in 2024. He has also appeared on the Mines Dean's List and Honor Roll each of the last four years.

MICHAEL KIETZMAN
From 2022-24, Kietzman owns two First-Team All-RMAC awards and seven Second-Team All-RMAC finishes at the conference championships. In his junior season alone, the Texan produced three NCAA "B" times at the RMAC Swimming & Diving Championships. Arguably most notable was his role on the 2022-23 800-freestyle relay which broke the program record at the midseason invite in Grand Junction, posting the fastest time in Oredigger history with and without adjustment for altitude.

RONAN LAUINGER
Last season Lauinger became a two-time All-American for the Orediggers, finishing 15th in the nation in the 400-IM and 14th in the nation in the 500-free. To date, he's a five-time All-RMAC swimmer and a conference champion in the 400-IM. Lauinger's name is written six times in the program record book and he has qualified for all three NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships so far. He's likely to qualify again as he is currently ranked ninth in the nation in the 400-IM.

JARON O'GRADY
Over the last three seasons, O'Grady has posted three Second-Team All-RMAC finishes at the conference championships. He was voted RMAC Swimming & Diving Academic Athlete of the Year in 2024 as well. Other accolades for O'Grady include, but are not limited to, Second-Team Scholar All-America three times and CSC Academic All-America in 2024. As a senior, O'Grady is currently top-25 in the nation in both the 1000-free and the 200-fly.

ANDRES SAA
For his career, Saa has been a specialist in distance freestyle and individual medley events. He has recently added mid-distance freestyle, butterfly, and IM to his arsenal. Saa was named the 2023 RMAC Summit Award winner and eventually earned CSCAA Second-Team Scholar All-America. He has scored points for Mines at the conference championships in back-to-back seasons as well with a top finish of seventh in the 1000-free in 2023. Also notable was a NCAA "B" cut in the 500-free at the 2023 RMAC meet.

MAX WARING
In 16 years of competitive swimming, Waring owns a club state title in the 200-fly, was a high school state A-finalist, and earned Second-Team All-RMAC in the 200-fly at the 2021 conference championships. His accolades have included a CSCAA Second-Team Scholar All-America nod, and two appearances on the RMAC Academic Honor Roll. Waring also posted a NCAA "B" cut in the 200-fly in 2023.

RECORD RELAY
At the TYR/CMU Invitational in November, Mines' women absolutely flew in the 400-freestyle relay in the final session on the final day of racing. The Oredigger quartet of Jennifer Pierson, Jordan Tierney, Maggie Wells, and Kylie VanderMeer posted an actual time of 3:28.24 which dropped to 3:27.84 when adjusted for altitude both marks were good enough for the program record book. That performance knocked off the previous record which was set during the 2019-20 season. It marks the first program record of the season for Mines' men or women.

IN THE RANKINGS
After a strong November, both Mines' men and women returned to the College Swimming and Diving Coaches' Association of America's (CSCAA) 2024-25 Division II Top 25 dual meet poll. The Orediggers had started the season with the men ranked #23 and the women at #25 before dropping out in November. December's national list saw the men slide in at #25 and the women rise all the way to #21.

NEW MAN ON DECK
Noah Hensley joined the Mines swimming staff over the summer as the second fulltime assistant coach in program history. Hensley brings nearly a decade of experience as a student-athlete and coach at the collegiate level. Most recently, the four-time NCAA All-American was the associate head coach for the men's and women's swimming & diving teams at NCAA Division I Miami University of Ohio. His resume also includes stops at IU Indianapolis (formerly IUPUI) and North Carolina State University where he also competed as a student-athlete. Fans can check out Hensley's full profile HERE.

ADDITIONAL ADDITIONS
Head Coach Claire McDaniel enhanced her staff further by hiring assistant coach Jackie Mudd and graduate assistant Colin Fenster. Mudd comes to Mines after competing collegiately at Biola University in California. She's originally from Littleton, Colo., and graduated from Columbine High School. Fenster was a student-athlete at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. That duo, combined with the aforementioned Hensley, join veteran assistant Andy Foley to round out the entire Oredigger staff led by McDaniel.

AT THE HELM
Colorado School of Mines Swimming Head Coach Claire McDaniel is in her sixth season at the helm for the Oredigger men and women. McDaniel won her third RMAC Coach of the Year on the men's side after guiding the Orediggers to team silver at the 2023-24 RMAC Swimming & Diving Championships. She also owns three RMAC Coach of the Year awards on the women's side. Through five seasons, McDaniel has coached five RMAC Swimmers of the Year, four RMAC Freshmen of the Year, and 25 all-American performances including 21 individual events and four relays.

Monday is the last meet of the regular season for Mines' men. Their next event will be the 2025 RMAC Swimming & Diving Championships running Feb. 11-15 in Grand Junction, Colo. The Oredigger women have one more dual before the post season as they head to Colorado State on Jan. 25.
