WEEK SIX RECAP
Last weekend saw Mines come out on the wrong end of a pair of 3-0 and 3-1 losses at MSU Denver and Colorado Christian. Highlights from the weekend saw the Orediggers score first Sunday at CCU thanks to the duo of
Brady Scheinfeld and
Lucas Taitt while
Kiernan DiBella combined for seven saves in goal across the two matches.
THE SKIPPER
With a record of 98-39-24 (.683) overall and 68-9-10 in RMAC action at the helm in Golden, skipper
Greg Mulholland has established himself as one of the top head coaches not just in Division II, but the NCAA as a whole. His career winning percentage is ranks in the top 10 among active Division II coaches with a minimum of five years of experience, and places him in the top 40 nationally across all divisions of the NCAA. An assistant with the Orediggers from 2007-2016 who served as interim head coach in 2017 before having the interim tag dropped in 2018, Mulholland ranks among the top 10 active Division II coaches with a minimum of five years on the job in winning percentage and is 15th across the entirety of NCAA Soccer. Under his direction, Mines has claimed a combined 11 regular season and postseason championships, running off six consecutive regular season crowns from 2017-22 and four tournament titles from 2017-20. Mulholland is also a four-time RMAC Coach of the Year and has twice headed up the United Soccer Coaches Regional Staff of the Year.
THE CAPTAINS
Prior to opening night against Azusa Pacific, the Orediggers announced their 2025 captains with two newcomers to the role and one returner.
Caden Allaire returns for his second run wearing the armband as he's joined by Luka Hanna and
Carter Jansen.
Allaire, a transfer from Casper College, heads into his senior season as the most experienced goalkeeper on the Mines roster. Over his first two seasons, he started 24 of 26 games he appeared in and registered 89 saves against 41 goals allowed in 2,135:58 between the pipes. For his career, he's netted six wins, four shutouts and has a .685 save rate to go with a 1.73 GAA.
Hanna, now in his third season with Mines after playing 2022 at Tulsa, appeared in 30 matches with 11 starts in his first two seasons, scoring a goal and taking seven shots in 1,272 minutes of action and enters this fall as a key figure in the Mines midfield.
Jansen, a third-year player who has been a fixture on the Mines backline since his arrival in Golden in 2023, appeared in 28 matches with 22 starts heading into his junior season and logged 1,828 minutes as an outside and center back.
IN THE POLLS
For the second season running, Mines was tabbed to finish fifth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's soccer preseason coaches poll.
UCCS was voted the preseason favorite this fall with five of 11 first place votes followed by Fort Lewis in second with three and defending champion CSU Pueblo in third with two. Regis was just ahead of Mines in fourth while MSU Denver was picked to finish sixth to round out the projected playoff field.
The top five in the national rankings saw a shakeup this week with the only constant being Lynn ranked #1. Stanislaus State moved up a spot to #2 while Charleston advanced a spot to #3. Anderson cracked the top five, moving up two spots to fourth while Palm Beach Atlantic rounded out the top five after moving up three spots from eighth.
Around the RMAC, Fort Lewis dropped nine spots this week down to #18 while CSU Pueblo plummeted to #23 following a 2-0 loss to South Dakota Mines. UCCS joined the fray this week, appearing at #22 while MSU Denver failed to earn votes this week.
HELLO, MY NAME IS…
Another 13 newcomers join the Orediggers for the 2025 season and make up more than one-third of this season's 36-man roster. 12 first-year players and a transfer make up the group which features a wide range of talent across the field. Learn more about the newcomers for this season
here.
JOINING THE STAFF
A new face will be roaming the Mines bench in 2025 as
Ben Fredrickson joined the program in May as the program's top assistant coach. Prior to joining the Orediggers, Fredrickson served as Real Colorado's Assistant Academy Director and head coach of the organization's U16 MLS Next program. A well-traveled coach with experience at a variety of levels, the New Zealander is no stranger to the RMAC as he played collegiately at Regis from 2010-13. He also played in the United Soccer League's second division as well as New Zealand First Division club Team Wellington. Learn more about Coach Fredrickson
here.
Additionally, a former Oredigger All-American returns to the bench this season as
Lucas King makes his coaching debut at the collegiate level. A six-year member of the Mines program thanks to the 2020 pandemic, King was a three-time All-RMAC and All-Region selection from the United Soccer Coaches and D2 CCA as well. He started 84 times in 91 matches in his five seasons of action and logged 62 points on 13 goals and 36 assists, the second-most in program history. 12 of King's assists came in the fall 2021 season, as that mark is the third-best in a season all-time.
CHECKING THE STANDINGS
Three weeks of RMAC play are in the books as UCCS leads the way with a 4-0-0 mark and a comfortable lead with 12 points in league action. MSU Denver and Colorado Mesa are tied for second with seven points with records of 2-0-1 and 2-1-1 respectively while Colorado Christian has picked a fine time for their first two wins of the year, standing 2-0-0 in conference with six points in fourth. Westminster stands fifth with five points and a 1-1-2 mark while Regis checks in sixth with four points and a mark of 1-1-1. Mines, South Dakota Mines and CSU Pueblo are all tied for seventh with three points with records of a 1-2-0, 1-3-0 and 0-1-3 while another surprise at the bottom of the standings is Fort Lewis with two points and a mark of 0-1-2. Adams State rounds out the field still seeking to get on the board at 0-4-0.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
Where matches have been played in 2025 seems to have at least some role in the outcome for the Orediggers this fall. Following last weekend's losses to MSU Denver and Colorado Christian, Mines is now 0-4-1 in five matches away from home. Meanwhile, the Silver & Blue are yet unbeaten when defending their home pitch at Stermole Stadium with a mark of 2-0-3 in five home matches. Also for comparison, the Mines offense has scored 13 times at home in 2025 and is +6 in goal differential in those matches. Compare that to13-3 goal deficit when playing on the road and being shutout three times, it seems this year's club has an affinity for playing in their own building. With just three more chances at home in 2025, the Orediggers will have to maximize their points starting this weekend while looking to change their fortunes on the road over the final four weeks of the regular season.
GO LONG
Long throw-ins have been point of success for Mines this season. Following
Brady Scheinfeld's goal Sunday, five of Mines' goals this season have come by way of long throws.
Charlie Newberry was the man on the throw back on September 25 against MSU Denver, finding
Leo Santana for the finish, but
Lucas Taitt has been the main man when it comes to going deep on throws. All four of his assists have come on throw-ins, doing so twice against Biola, once against South Dakota Mines and most recently Sunday at CCU. Heading into the final month of the season, the Orediggers will look to continue their success in this area as they look to make a push for the postseason.
YOUTH MOVEMENT
Over the last two seasons, 22 first-year players have joined the Oredigger program and heading into 2025, make up nearly two-thirds of the 36-man roster. The expectation for new arrivals is high as the Silver and Navy look to reclaim their spot as one of the premier programs in the RMAC.
Noah Roles,
Kian Mueller,
Smith Russell,
Jaden Igarta and
Josh Ary made good first impressions as they each contributed and tallied at least one point each in their debut seasons, while the rest of their class in
Ethan Huet,
Jake Macha,
Brady Scheinfeld,
Lucas Taitt and
Dennis Polzin all eagerly await making their debuts after taking developmental years as freshmen. Meanwhile, this year's crop of newcomers looks to make a similar first year impact as two of the top prep goalkeepers in Colorado last year
Kiernan DiBella and
Zach MacDonald will seek to compete for playing time while the rest of the nine first-year field players will look to contribute as well.
WELL-TRAVELED VETERAN
It isn't any secret that the academic reputation of Mines brings folks from all points on the globe. Athletics just extends that reach farther as evidenced by Alaskan
Simon Carricaburu. Carricaburu, a second-year Mines student, enters his first year with the varsity program after playing with the Orediggers' club program last year, is no stranger to playing at the collegiate level. After beginning his career in 2022 at Western Oregon and appearing in just three matches, he transferred to Santa Barbara City college and showed his potential, earning Second Team All-Region honors as part of a 10-7-5 season in which he tallied three points on a goal and an assist. Now back at the NCAA level, Carricaburu's experience will be something the Orediggers rely on to help bolster their defense.
THE BROTHERS LEVIN
Family ties are no stranger to the Mines community with multiple generations of families passing through the institution over the years. When looking at Mines athletics programs, family ties are regular occurrences. This season, a new family connection comes to Golden as
Marc Levin and
Avi Levin reunite in 2025. Natives of St. Louis and both graduates of Ladue Horton Watkins High School, the brothers never had an opportunity to play together at the varsity level as they'll have plenty of chances to do so over the next couple seasons.
Marc, a fourth-year junior, missed all of 2024 with injury but is a pivotal piece of Mines soccer history as he netted the game-winning penalty kick in the 2022 RMAC Men's Soccer Championship over CSU Pueblo. In 28 career matches, he's started 10 times and scored four times with two assists for 10 points in 722 minutes and will look to once again be a contributor as he eases his way back into the action.
Avi joins the program as a freshman this season after he earned a slew of high school accolades including a state championship.
They are the second pair of brothers to play concurrently for Mines along with
Henry Saunders and
Peter Saunders who joined the program 2023, and just the third pair of players with a shared last name since Baski Baker and Colin Baker (no relation) in 2013.

SCOUTING WESTMINSTER
Westminster enters this weekend following a 1-0-1 weekend at home against Fort Lewis and Adams State as they played the Skyhawks to a 3-3 draw before blowing out the Grizzlies 4-0.
13 different Griffins have scored a goal this season led by Owen Gallo's three while Jack Cardwell, Alejandro Puente and Cam Neely each have a pair of goals to their credit. A further nine players, headlined by Max Edwards who scored against the Orediggers last month, each have scored once this season.
Cardwell meanwhile leads the team with five assists while Gallo, Puente, Ashton Duran and James Miles have two assists each. An additional eight players have one assist each.
Goalkeeping duties have shifted more in favor of Tommy Manwaring as he's started all seven of his outings for 630 minutes. In that time, he's gone 2-3-2 with one shutout and against 70 shots, has made 23 saves against 11 goals allowed for a 1.57 GAA and a .676 save rate. Oliver Olsen, who posted a shutout over Mines last month, has started all five of his matches played for 450 minutes and is 3-2-0 with three shutouts. Against 34 shots, he's allowed four goals and made seven saves and posted a 0.80 GAA and a .636 save percentage.
On the season, Westminster is +3 in scoring margin at 18-15 and averages 1.50 goals on 12.1 shots per match while opponents have scored 1.25 goals on 8.7 shots per match. They have been whistled for 109 fouls, 29 of which have resulted in cautions while two have resulted in ejections.
SCOUTING COLORADO MESA
Colorado Mesa's open date falls this week so their lone action of the weekend will see them come in on full rest Sunday against the Orediggers. Last weekend the Mavericks made light work of Adams State and Fort Lewis, winning by scores of 5-0 and 4-1.
A even dozen players have scored for CMU this fall led by one of the RMAC scoring leaders Manuel Ponce Casas with seven. Nathan Hernandez follows with five while Matteo Bonelli and Kamden Kooiman have four each. Cain Castellon and Daniel Paulsson each have two goals while a further six players have one goal apiece.
Looking at assists, Hernandez and Bonelli lead CMU with four each while Castellon, Riccardo Legnante and Kensho Negi follow with three. Ponce Casas and Connor Chilson meanwhile have two each with Justin Ibrahim and George Jones adding one each.
Nathan Beck has played all 990 minutes in goal this season, starting all 11 matches and posting a 5-4-2 record with three shutout. In his work this season, he has faced 141 shots and made 32 saves while allowing 20 goals for a 1.82 GAA and a .615 save rate.
The second-highest scoring offense in the RMAC entering this weekend, CMU is +11 in goal differential at 31-20 and averages close to three goals per match at 2.82 while taking 13.6 shots per match. Opponents meanwhile average 1.82 goals on 12.7 shots.
The Mavericks have 23 assists on their 31 goals and have made 34 saves defensively. They are 1-1 from the spot this fall and have taken 56 corner kicks. CMU has been whistled for 113 fouls this season and issued 18 yellow cards.
SERIES HISTORY
Following their loss three weeks ago to the Griffins, Mines is now 16-8-4 in the all-time series with Westminster. Fortunately for the Orediggers, home field advantage has been a real factor against WU, as they have a 10-4-1 record when playing at Stermole Stadium. The last time the sides met in Golden saw a 2-1 Oredigger win in the second of two meetings between the teams in 2023, following a loss in non-conference action.
Against Colorado Mesa, the Orediggers are 23-6-2 all-time following a thrilling 2-1 win in Grand Junction last fall. When playing at home, Mines is 12-2-1 against the Mavericks and will look to atone for a 3-2 loss during the last meeting at Stermole Stadium in 2023. Prior to that result, the Orediggers had a 6-0-1 mark over their previous seven home dates with CMU dating back to 2015.
