TOURNAMENT FORMAT
The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference volleyball tournament is an eight-team, single-elimination event. Action across the league begins Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. with a quartet of quarterfinals hosted by the top four seeds. Winners on Tuesday advance to Friday's semifinals hosted by the highest remaining seed. Saturday's final will be played at the same site as the semifinals whether the hosts win or not. Also, teams are not re-seeded for the semifinals and finals. So, if the Orediggers defeat Colorado Mesa, they will either play #9-ranked and top-seeded MSU Denver or eighth-seeded Adams State.

THE BRACKET
Last Saturday, the bracket for the 2025 conference tournament was finalized with most teams playing their final matches of the regular season. Tied at the top were #9-ranked MSU Denver and UCCS with the Roadrunners earning the #1 seed thanks to their head-to-head tiebreaker. Right behind the second-seeded Mountain Lions was CSU Pueblo. Mines rounded out the top four thanks to its head-to-head tiebreaker with Colorado Mesa. All of the top four seeds earned quarterfinal hosting rights for Tuesday's action. That means MSU Denver hosts eighth-seeded Adams State, UCCS hosts seventh-seeded Fort Lewis, and CSU Pueblo welcomes sixth-seeded Westminster.

STRONG FINISH
Mines pushed to a strong close to the 2025 regular season. The Orediggers went on the road and defeated Chadron State in four sets on Friday and downed Regis in three sets on Saturday. Those two wins gave Mines a record of 11-2 across its last 13 outings. Top performers over the weekend included Jenna McLaughlin, Abbie O'Shay, Hailee Martinez, and Jada Price. McLaughlin posted 24 kills on .355 hittting and had two aces with four total blocks as well. O'Shay hit .522 and collected 14 kills with five blocks in five sets of action. At setter, Martinez handed out 76 assists while averaging 10.86 assists per set.  She chipped in one ace and two kills too. Price was outstanding after churning out 7.0 digs per set at Chadron State. She finished the weekend boasting 40 digs (5.71 dps) and one ace.

TOURNAMENT HISTORY
As mentioned above, Tuesday marks the Orediggers' first appearance in the RMAC tournament since the 2022 season. Prior to that, Mines had played in 15 consecutive conference postseasons. Since the 2008 arrival of Head Coach Jamie Magalei and Assistant Coach Heather Dewhirst, the Orediggers have claimed five league tournament crowns. Three of those were consecutive from 2019-2021. Mines' RMAC tournament record is 24-10 under the guidance of Magalei and Dewhirst. Since 2015, the Orediggers are 18-3 when competing in the league bracket. Mines' seeding breakdown includes on #6 seed, two #5 seeds, four #4 seeds (including 2025), one #3 seed, four #2 seeds, and four #1 seeds. The Orediggers won their first RMAC tournament as a #1 seed in 2015.

SCOUTING COLORADO MESA
A rollercoaster 2025 season for Colorado Mesa featured a strong finish for the Mavericks. They closed the regular season with four straight wins after a hiccup right before and during the RMAC Power Pod. The Mavericks' four straight wins were at home against Chadron State and Regis, and on the road at Black Hills State and South Dakota Mines. Sadie Scoville enters Tuesday's match as the reigning RMAC Offensive Player of the Week. For the season, Scoville leads her team with 302 kills and ranks second with 27 service aces. Allison Waller comes to Golden, Colo., as the defending RMAC Defensive Player of the Week. Her line for 2025 includes 295 digs at 4.04 digs per set. The Mavericks use two setters with Ashlyn Tafoya and Addie Swanson handling the duties. At the net, Aesha Alrashed touts 98 blocks at an average of 1.07 blocks per set. As a team, CMU ranks #22 in the nation in hitting percentage.

OREDIGGERS AGAINST THE MAVERICKS
Mines and Colorado Mesa played once during the regular season, and the contest was at Lockridge Arena. The Orediggers pulled off a reverse sweep of the Mavericks for a 3-2 victory. That win also gave Mines the edge in the final conference standings. It also gave the Orediggers their 23rd all-time victory over CMU and was the first Mines win against the Mavericks since a five-set thriller in the 2021 RMAC tournament – which Mines eventually won. In fact, the Orediggers have taken four consecutive RMAC tournament matches off of Colorado Mesa. The last time Mines and CMU met in the quarterfinals was 2019 in Golden and the Orediggers won a five-set thriller. Mines hasn't lost a conference tournament match to Colorado Mesa since 2008. The all-time record between the Orediggers and CMU is 47-23-1 in favor of Colorado Mesa.

PERUSING THE FIELD
Overall, Mines went a combined 6-4 against the rest of the bracket during the regular season. That mark includes pod play which didn't count toward the conference standings. The Orediggers dropped their conference match to MSU Denver at home in five sets, but defeated the Roadrunners in straight sets at Volk Gym during pod play. Mines suffered an 0-2 mark at the hands of UCCS between pod and conference play. The lone meeting with CSU Pueblo was in Pueblo, Colo., and went to the home team in straight sets. As previously mentioned, Mines took its lone match against Colorado Mesa in five set at Lockridge Arena. The Orediggers were a combined 3-0 when playing Westminster and Fort Lewis. They also won their single conference match against Adams State.

REGIONAL RANKINGS
The first ordered NCAA Division II volleyball regional rankings came out last Wednesday, and Colorado School of Mines was fourth in the South Central Region. Mines debuted the previous week as a team under consideration on an alphabetical list of 10 squads. The latest ranked list includes MSU Denver first, West Texas A&M second, UCCS third, Angelo State fifth, CSU Pueblo sixth, Lubbock Christian seventh, Texas Woman's eighth, Colorado Mesa ninth, and Texas A&M-Kingsville 10th. Only the top eight teams in the final edition of the regional rankings advance to the NCAA tournament. That puts CMU and TAMUK on the outside looking in with one before the NCAA bracket is announced. If the season ended today, MSU Denver would host the South Central Region tournament and the Orediggers would face Angelo State in the first round. The regional rankings updated with the end of the regular season will be posted on Wednesday afternoon at www.ncaa.com.

JADA JOINS THE CLUB
During Mines' RMAC match at Fort Lewis on Oct. 17, Jada Price surpassed 1,000 digs as an Oredigger. She hit the milestone on the nose thanks to 20 digs in the five-set thriller in Durango. Now, in just under four collegiate seasons, Price owns 1,164 digs, 184 assists, 76 service aces, and five kills from the back row. The last Oredigger to go over 1,000 career digs was Elle Duis who played from 2018-11 and is now an assistant coach for Mines. Duis also happens to be the program's all-time leader in digs with a total of 2,285 across five seasons.

1000 KILLS
Earlier this season, Amanda Donais Dudley surpassed 1,000 kills for her collegiate career. The crafty veteran now touts 1,132 kills along with 958 digs, 237 total blocks, 106 aces, and 104 assists. Those who are quick with the simple match know Donais Dudley sits just 42 digs from a second admittance into Club 1K. Donais Dudley originally played for Mines from 2018-21 and was an all-American as a senior. She finished her bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and graduated in the spring of 2022. However, Donais Dudley still had a year of college eligibility remaining due to the COVID-19 pandemic. So, when she decided to come back to Mines for a master's degree in mechanical engineering, she decided to play some more volleyball. The 2025 season will be Donais Dudley's final collegiate campaign.

STANDING IN THE HALL OF FAME
Five-time all-American Danielle Johnson-Hazlewood was announced as a member of the Mines Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2025 over the summer. She was officially enshrined on Oct. 4. One of the most decorated players in Mines volleyball history, Johnson-Hazlewood is one of an elite few Orediggers in any sport to have been a four-year RMAC champion. She led Mines to the conference regular-season titles in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015. Johnson-Hazlewood also helped the Orediggers win the RMAC Tournament title as a senior in 2015. Fans can read her entire Mines Athletics Hall of Fame profile HERE.

AT THE HELM
Head Coach Jamie Magalei is in her 18th season leading the Mines volleyball program. She is easily the program's all-time leader in total wins and win percentage at 383-145 (.725). Magalei surpassed 300 career wins in 2021. She's one of six to reach the milestone while coaching in the RMAC. Through 2024, Magalei has coached 31 all-America selections, three Academic All-Americans, and 66 all-conference performers. Her resume also includes three Regional Players of the Year, two Regional Freshmen of the Year, and 16 RMAC major award winners. Magalei has guided Mines to six RMAC regular-season championships, and five RMAC Tournament titles with 13 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances from 2009-22 (no NCAA tournament in 2020). The North Dakota native also guided the Orediggers to either a conference regular-season or tournament title every season from 2012-21 including a sweep of both in 2015.
