GOLDEN, Colo. - #21 Colorado School of Mines went 2-1 to close 2025 as they hosted some of the nation's best at the Jack Hancock Duals on Saturday.
The Orediggers (6-1) upset #17 Central Missouri 21-20 on a tiebreaker before dispatching Belmont Abbey 31-16, but ran out of gas against a tough Minnesota State lineup to suffer their first dual loss of the season at 31-15.
#2
Cody Thompson impressed with a 3-0 day at 149 pounds, and
Mason Diel was 2-0 as both
Jake Goodin,
Jakob Smith, and
Brandon Cody each earned a pair of wins.
Wrestling their opener against Central Missouri with only daylight from the windows in historic Volk Gym due to a citywide power outage in Golden, the Orediggers and Mules went back and forth splitting the 10 bouts to finish tied 20-20, with Goodin's pin to start the dual at 125 pounds ending up being the deciding tiebreaker criteria. Goodin's first-period pin got Mines ahead before UCM earned technical falls at both 133 and 141 pounds, but Thompson righted the ship with an 8-2 victory before
Brandon Cody won 5-2 to lead 12-10 through five bouts. UCM's #9 Gage Bernall won a major decision at 165 but Smith got points back with a 15-0 technical fall in his debut up a weight at 174, and
Wyatt Reisz, also up a wegith to 184, gave a fantastic account in a tight 4-2 loss to the nation's #1-ranked 184-pounder in Damon Ashworth.
That left the dual tied 17-17 and the final two weight classes didn't provide any more clarity as
Mason Diel won 5-3, but Torin Forsythe edged
Laith Ibrahim 5-3 to make it 20-20, with Goodin's pin proving decisive to break the tie.
Power returned after the first dual, and Mines relied on bonus points to run away with its dual against Belmont Abbey, winning 31-16 in the day's middle time slot. After starting with a forfeit win for Goodin at 125, the Orediggers got a Thompson major decision (12-4) at 149, Cody's 14-2 major at 157,
Deringer Hollenbeck's pin at 165, Smith's 18-2 technical fall at 174, and Ibrahim's third-period pin to end at 285. Mines trailed 10-6 after three bouts but rallied back with 21-point swing between 149 and 174 pounds.
Against Minnesota State, the Mavericks ran away with the dual 31-15 thanks to four pins as they built a big early lead. MSU's middleweights, which featured three straight ranked competitors between 157 and 174, closed the door on Mines' comeback hopes after Thompson pinned #12 Walker Bents in the first period to get the Orediggers on the board. Diel won 4-2 at 184 and Reisz, going up another weight class to 197, earned an 8-2 decision before
Cade Whish's last-second takedown won his heavyweight bout 3-0.
In other results at the Jack Hancock Duals, Minnesota State went 3-0 adding a 35-11 win over Belmont Abbey and edging Central Missouri 17-16, and UCM topped BAC 38-9.
Mines will break for the holidays and return Jan. 9 in an RMAC dual at Chadron State.
