GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Wednesday brought the first full day of the 2025 RMAC Swimming & Diving Championships, and the nationally-ranked Colorado School of Mines Men's and Women's Swimming teams delivered great success during the morning session.
Â
The official docket featured prelims in the 200-IM and the 50-free followed by the initial final heats of the 1000-free. There were also time trials as well. Overall, the Oredigger men and women combined to send 21 individuals into the evening finals with four others already seeded in the fast heat of the 1000-free. Mines also saw three individuals produce NCAA "B" cuts after three were turned in during Tuesday night's 800-freestyle relay. Those NCAA times were from leadoff legs by
Jennifer Pierson,
Ronan Lauinger, and
Michael Kietzman. Pierson's altitude-adjusted 1:50.52 would have ranked top-20 in the nation prior to the start of conference championships around the country.
Â
Action opened with the 200-IM.
Olivia Kisow and
Ava Burger raced into the "A" final,
Zooecia Phoebus and
Sophia Buhr were fast enough to get into the "B" final, and
Savannah Karas moved on to the "C" final – in its first year of existence at the RMAC Championships. The men's 200-IM produced a quartet of Oredigger finalists. Lauinger and
Gavin Moore put their names down for the evening's fast race.
Andres Saa and
Gavin Gilmore advanced to the "B" final.
Max Waring,
Joe Hutchinson,
Jack Engler, and
Mattie Oberley all raced the 200-IM for Mines as well.
Â
Up next was the 50-free, and the Orediggers thrived. In the women's event,
Jennifer Pierson led Mines with a NCAA "B" cut of 23.72 which pushed her into the "A" final, seeded sixth.
Sophia Cristal,
Emi Jedryka,
Abby Swanson,
Kylie VanderMeer, and
Jordan Tierney flew as well. Cristal and Jedryka earned "B" berths with Swanson, VanderMeer, and Tierney positioned to score in the "C" finals. Among those performances were multiple collegiate and career-best times. The men's 50-free proved equally productive as
Sawyer Jones and
Michael Kietzman finished fifth and sixth for a spot in the "A" final.
Jakson Winn had a swim-off for ninth and won, putting him along with
Luca Burns,
Kevin Burns, and
Brenden Cook in the "B" finals. Other Orediggers appearing in the sprint were
Kerrigan Hemp,
Lucas Waasdorp, and
Oliver Theby.
Â
The early rounds of the 1000-free wrapped up the morning for Mines and the distance action did not disappoint. In the men's races,
Jake Sherman pumped out a NCAA "B" cut of 9:34.68 which would have ranked top-25 in the nation after altitude-adjusment prior to RMACs. That put him second overall and guaranteed nothing worse than 10th-place points with eight swimmers left to go in the night session.
Cameron MacMillan and
Jaron O'Grady also locked in team points for the Orediggers by way of top-eight finishes in the morning group. On the women's side,
Julie Gill produced Mines' third NCAA "B" cut of the day by racing the 1000-free in a raw time of 10:33.88. Like the men, eight women are left to compete the 1000-free, but
Eden Addison,
Maggie Wells, and
Elizabeth Powers all promised team points to the Orediggers as well.
Vladislav Kazakin,
Joseph Lev-Tov,
Lucas Hoke, and
Isabella Bono are all seeded in the top eight of the 1000-free and will race for RMAC gold on Wednesday evening.
Â
Finals in the 200-IM, 50-free, 1000-free, diving, and the 200-medley relay will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening with pay-per-view streaming on the RMAC Network.
