As a team, Mines (4-8) batted .312. Six of the Orediggers' 10 hits also went for extra bases. However, the visitors left six men on base. Meanwhile, UCCS scored its 13 runs on 13 hits for a .342 average. The Mountain Lions churned out two doubles and two home runs. They also benefitted from three fielding errors by Mines. The Oredigger pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts and 11 walks. Mountain Lion arms struck out nine and walked five.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mines pushed in four runs across the first two innings and four more runs in the final frame. Scoring began with back-to-back, one-out doubles off the bats of Babcock and Pina. A Dunagan double, Moeck single, and two-run home run from Babock in the second afforded the Orediggers a 4-1 lead. From the bottom of the second inning through the bottom of the eighth, UCCS stacked up 12 unanswered runs. Finally, in the ninth, Mines' offense found life, but not enough. Babcock worked a bases-loaded walk and brought in
Ryan Vermeer. Then, Leiphart hit a pinch-hit, two-out, three-run double. The Mountain Lions made a quick pitching change and ended the game there.
