Point Loma's campus is about an hour south in San Diego, Calif., and Friday's forecast is nearly identical to Thursday's back north – same temperature, cloudy, and a 20-percent chance of rain. The clouds will clear a little on Saturday, the high temperature will stay the same and the chance of rain will drop.
SCOUTING CAL STATE SAN MARCOS
Cal State San Marcos started its 2025 campaign last weekend with a four-game, home sweep of Saint Martin's. The winning scores were 9-1, 17-13, 6-5, and 12-5. In the series, the quartet of Garrett Teunissen, Hayden Tregidga, Cameron Mahaffy, and Sommay Phoenix combined to score 25 runs. Tregidga and Mahaffy also put up a total of 15 RBI thanks to two home runs apiece. Overall on offense, CSUSM hit .315 as a team and slugged .598. On the mound, Spencer Anderson was the star arm. He went 1-0 in one start thanks to 5.0 innings of one-run, three-hit baseball. He worked around five walks and struck out six batters. Zach Coleman started and won as well. Sammy Murphy and Porter Robinson claimed decisions out of the bullpen. There was one save awarded and it went to Nolan Long who made two appearances and totaled 1.0 inning of work. The Cougars' staff ERA was 6.35 thanks to 42 strikeouts compared to 31 walks.
OREDIGGERS AGAINST THE COUGARS
Mines and Cal State San Marcos have played seven times in the last three years. The Orediggers own a 5-2 record in that span. Their most recent meeting was the finale of a three-game series last February. Mines earned the 4-0 win thanks to
Jackson Woolwine and
Alex Honeyman. Woolwine went 2-for-3, scored two runs, had two RBI, and walked once while tallying a double and a triple. Honeyman was the starting pitcher and spun 5.0 innings of three-hit baseball with five strikeouts and two walks. Over the course of two different series, CSUSM has dodged being swept by taking the finale in 2022 and the front end of last year's doubleheader.
SCOUTING POINT LOMA
Point Loma swept the PacWest Conference titles in 2024, advanced to the NCAA tournament, won the West Region, won their super region, and eventually advanced to the NCAA Division II Baseball Championships in Cary, N.C. That performance granted the Sea Lions their preseason ranking of #5 in the nation. All that being said, PLNU is off to a 1-2 start in 2025 after opening at home and dropping two of three to Chico State. Point Loma won its opener in 10 innings, 3-2. The Wildcats proceeded to win 12-3 and 3-0 as part of a Saturday doubleheader. The Sea Lions' offense only batted .198 with Luke Reece leading the way on three hits including one double and one home run. Noah Meffert also hit a double and a home run. Reece and Owen May scored twice. Nobody had multiple RBI. Branden Jackel was PLNU's winning pitcher on the merits of 4.2 innings of shutout relief. He struck out three and walked one. Brock Mayer and Kenny Esposito took the losses due to eight runs given up between the two. Also notable on the mound was Ray Cebulski who struck out five in 5.1 innings of work.
OREDIGGERS AGAINST THE SEA LIONS
According to available records, this weekend will be the first-ever meeting between Mines and Point Loma on the baseball diamond.
REVIEWING OPENING WEEKEND
The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team started its season last weekend at Southwestern Oklahoma State in Weatherford. The Orediggers dropped the first three games before winning the finale, 11-5. Mines' losing scores were 8-3, 18-7, and 5-2.
Alex Dunagan was the Orediggers' top weapon at the plate. He batted .727 across four games and scored two runs on eight hits including two doubles and one home run with four RBI.
Tyler Pina also hit .455 and scored twice.
Trent Nielsen provided four runs and three RBI by way of two doubles and a home run. Despite the offensive production, errors in the field kept the Orediggers from additional wins. They had 14 on the weekend. On the mound,
Seaver Newby was the winning pitcher thanks to 5.2 innings of one-run (unearned), two-hit relief featuring seven strikeouts and one loss.
Alex Honeyman was also impressive as he started the opener and surrendered just one unearned run in 6.0 innings. He struck out six and walked zero but took the loss due to three unearned runs on fielding errors.
RMAC PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Seaver Newby's efforts in Mines' win earned the sophomore RMAC Pitcher of the Week distinction. As mentioned above, Newby came out of the bullpen on Sunday and threw 5.2 innings of relief. He allowed just one unearned run on two hits and struck out seven compared to one walk. The Texan limited the Bulldogs to a .095 average and posted a 0.53 WHIP. It marked the first collegiate win of Newby's career and his first weekly award. Amusingly enough, those firsts came in Mines' first win of the season and the award was the first of the season as well.
OREDIGGER DEBUTS
Last weekend, eight Orediggers played their very first game in a Mines uniform.
Jackson Babcock,
Tyler Easter, and
Luke Parker made their debuts in the field and at the plate. Babcock impressed by hitting .357 with one run on five hits including a double and one RBI. On the mound,
Grady Booth,
Grant Reising,
Sam Monk,
Will Niles, and
Cade Burghardt all debuted for the Orediggers. Reising, Monk, and Niles all turned in 0.00 ERAs with Booth tallying three strikeouts.
PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN
Oredigger redshirt senior
Mason Andrews was named a Preseason Second-Team All-American by D2 Baseball earlier this month. He earned the recognition after an outstanding 2024 season in which he hit .372 with 65 runs on 67 hits including 12 doubles and 17 home runs leading to 56 RBI. The McKinney, Texas, native slugged .722 and had an on-base percentage of .464. He also stole 10 bases. For his career, Andrews boasts 153 runs on 158 hits including 33 doubles, seven triples, and 38 home runs with 131 RBI and 67 walks. Those numbers put him position to make moves in the program record book this season. Most notably, he's nine home runs away from becoming the program's all-time home run king.
IN THE PROS
Over the last seven years, three Orediggers have entered baseball's professional ranks. Mikey Gangwish (2016-19) was the first as he played professionally in Australia before returning to a contract with the Evansville Otters of the independent Frontier League. He has since retired and earned his master's degree at Mines. The second was Trevor Kehe (2017-19) who was drafted in the 36th round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Baltimore Orioles. He worked in the Orioles organization for three years and advanced as far as High-A ball with the Aberdeen IronBirds before retiring. Rounding out but leading the trio is Walter Pennington (2017-20).
WALTER PENNINGTON
Walter Pennington had a milestone season in 2024. After spending 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 in the Kansas City Royals minor league system, the former Oredigger left-handed pitcher broke into the big leagues. He made his MLB debut with the Royals against the Rockies at Coors Field, just miles from his childhood home. That appearance made the Broomfield, Colo., native just the second Mines player to ever make the big leagues and the first in over a century. Eventually, Pennington was traded to the Texas Rangers for known-veteran Michael Lorenzen. Pennington moved between triple-A Round Rock and the Rangers' big-league club. For the year, the lefty's big-league resume featured a 1-0 record with a 3.00 ERA in 16 games and one start. He struck out 17 and walked 11 across 18.0 innings of work. For his career in the minor leagues, Pennington is 23-11 with a 3.49 ERA in 149 appearances and four starts. He also boasts 10 saves and 258 strikeouts with 245.0 innings under his belt. To round it all out, Pennington named to the International League (AAA) All-Star team. More to come on Pennington as the season progresses.
THE SKIPPER
The 2025 campaign marks Mines' seventh season with
Robby Bales as head coach. During his tenure as the Oredigger skipper, Bales holds an overall record of 147-109 with a mark of 95-71 in RMAC play. He has coached his players to 26 All-RMAC awards, 19 all-region awards, eight all-America nods, seven CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, one MLB Draft Pick and had one player signed as a free agent in the MLB. Furthermore, Bales touts two RMAC Pitchers of the Year during his time at the helm including RMAC Pitcher of the Year, NCBWA South Central Region Pitcher of the Year, D2CCA South Central Region Pitcher of the Year and the RMAC's all-time wins leader in Tyler Blomster. Additionally, Bales has guided Mines to the NCAA Tournament once, and RMAC Tournament four times, advancing to the regional and conference tournament final in 2019. Bales' teams have also performed in the classroom as the squad brought home the RMAC Brechler Award in 2020, 2021, and 2023 as the team boasting the highest combined GPA in the conference.
LOOKING AHEAD
Mines opens the home portion of its schedule next Saturday and Sunday against Fort Hays State at Jim Darden Field. Free live stats and video on the RMAC Network will be available for all three games at www.minesathletics.com.
