One-Run Losses Torment Mines in California

SAN DIEGO – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader on Saturday at #5 Point Loma by scores of 7-6 and 4-3.

Jackson Babcock had the hot bat for the visitors in the tormenting losses. Across the two games, Babock hit .625 with one run on five hits, one RBI, and two stolen bases. Trent Nielsen batted .500 and scored two runs with two RBI. Tyler Pina produced the most offense thanks to three runs and two RBI. He notched a total of three hits including one home run and walked once. Mason Andrews, Canon Humphreys, and Evan Bilter tallied one double each. Alex Dunagan rounded out the highlights by stealing two bases.

Peter Lynch (0-1) and Grady Booth (0-2) were the Oredigger starters on the mound and the pitchers of decision. Lynch and Booth each struck out three batters and combined to walk six. The result was a total of 11 runs on 10 hits. Sam Monk and Seaver Newby were used in relief and both turned in a 0.00 ERA. Monk lasted 5.0 innings with no hits, one strikeout, and four walks. Newby churned out 2.1 innings of three-hit, shutout baseball – striking out one and walking zero. Bobby Brown (1-0) and Brock Mayer (1-1) earned wins. Christian Williams collected two saves.

Mines (2-6) had a higher batting average and better slugging percentage than Point Loma (4-2). The Orediggers and Sea Lions also committed two fielding errors apiece. However, Mines' pitchers walked a total of 10 batters and only fanned eight. Pitchers for PLNU struck out 12 and walked just four. There was one double play turned for each team across two games and 16 innings of baseball.

HOW IT HAPPENED
All 13 runs in the first game of the day were scored in the first four innings. Pina put Mines on the scoreboard first with his two-out, two-run home run in the top of the first. Point Loma responded with four runs in its half of the opening frame. Each time the Orediggers scored, the Sea Lions had a response. The result was a 5-5 ballgame after three innings of play. Mines even retook the lead in the top of the fourth when Bilter drove in Nielsen. Once again, PLNU responded, scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning and reclaiming a 7-6 advantage. Monk provided hope for the Orediggers as he no-hit Point Loma over the last four frames. Unfortunately for Mines, the visitors' offense never reemerged and the Sea Lions clinched a series win.

In game two of the day and the series finale, Point Loma did its damage in the first and third innings. The blows came off the bat Jake Entrekin who hit a pair of two-run home runs. The Orediggers did tie the game in the second inning with a Nielsen sacrifice fly and a passed ball that scored Babcock. Nielsen even drove in Pina in the fourth to make it a one-run game. But, in the end, Newby's shutout relief went to the wayside as Mines' offense failed to reignite in the fifth, sixth, or seventh frames. Sea Lions' closer Christian Williams worked around back-to-back singles from Nielsen and Dunagan to get his second save of the day.
