Mines Handed Run-Rule Loss at MSU Denver

DENVER, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team opened its series at MSU Denver on Friday with a 20-8, run-rule loss.

Despite coming up short on the scoreboard, there was still plenty of offense for the visitors. Jackson Woolwine, Evan Bilter, and Mason Andrews each produced three-hit performances. Woolwine's trio of knocks included two doubles. Bilter had a double and scored twice as well. Andrews smacked one home run, one double, and one single – just a triple short of hitting for the cycle. He also notched two runs and two RBI. A stolen base for Woolwine and a home run off the bat of Tyler Easter rounded out the highlights at the plate. Carter Gorling started on the mound, but did not factor in the decision. Grady Booth (0-5) took the loss in relief. Jackson Kay, Nick Lacson, and Matthew Dobberthien also made appearances out of the bullpen. Each arm to pitch the bottom half gave up multiple runs. Kay and Dobberthien combined to strike out seven batters.

The loss snapped a modest, four-game win streak for Mines (10-16, 5-4 RMAC). The victory was only the second RMAC win of the season for MSU Denver (10-13, 2-3 RMAC). The Orediggers' scored their eight runs on 15 hits. Those hits included five doubles and four home runs. Twenty runs for the Roadrunners were produced by 18 hits. Only two of MSU Denver's hits went for extra bases. Mines' pitching staff recorded seven strikeouts and suffered from 11 walks and five hit batters. The home arms struck out five, walked one, and hit none. Rodriguez started for the Roadrunners and Peters earned the win thanks to 4.0 innings of work out of the bullpen.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Friday afternoon started with a Woolwine double. That fueled two Oredigger runs in the top of the first. Back-to-back doubles for Mines in the top of the second were provided by Tyler Hummel and Andrews. Unfortunately for the Orediggers, MSU Denver stacked three runs in the first, three in the second, one in the third and then 10 total runs across the fourth and fifth frames. The extended outburst more than offset Andrews' solo home run in the sixth and Easter's two-run bomb right before the stretch. An infield single by Canon Humphreys earlier in the fourth inning was the only other offense for the visitors.

NOTABLES
- Since 2009, Mines is 37-38 against MSU Denver.
- Easter's home run was his first as an Oredigger.
- Andrews hit the 43rd long ball of his collegiate career. He's now four shy of breaking Mikey Gangwish's program home run record.
- With two doubles, Woolwine moved into a tie for #5 with Logan Smith in the program record book. Both Smith and Woolwine own 49 career doubles.
- Andrews now touts exactly 150 RBI during his time at Mines. That ties him with Cody Marvel for #4 in the program record book.
- Oredigger Head Coach Robby Bales is now 156-121 in his seventh season leading Mines.
