Doubleheader Goes to Roadrunners in Denver

DENVER, Colo. – Both games of Saturday's doubleheader between the Colorado School of Mines Baseball team and MSU Denver went to the Roadrunners by scores of 11-9 and 13-10.

Across two gritty contests, Evan Bilter and Wayne Moeck each totaled four hits for the day. Bilter had a double, scored two runs and drove in three more. Moeck notched three runs and two RBI. Jackson Woolwine was productive as well. He recorded three hits between the two games including two home runs. His final line in the doubleheader featured three runs, three RBI, and three walks. Also notable were three doubles off the bat of Jackson Babcock. Canon Humphreys capped the highlights by stealing three bases in the second game of the day.

Gray St. Amant and Will Niles were the starting pitchers. Neither factored in their respective decision after a total of one strikeout and two walks for the duo. Luke Parker (0-1) took the loss in the first game despite striking out three batters. He was plagued by three runs on two hits and four walks. Seaver Newby (5-2) wore the decision in game two after giving up five runs on four hits. Newby did strike out five and walk zero. Other visiting arms to appear on Saturday included Nicholas Spidel, Grant Reising, and Ryan Semin.

In 14 innings of action, Mines (10-18, 5-6 RMAC) scored its 19 runs by stacking 23 hits. MSU Denver (12-13, 4-3 RMAC) accumulated its 24 runs on 25 hits including eight home runs. The Orediggers' defense committed one error in each game. The Roadrunners were error-free in game one and had two miscues in the second game of the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The story of the first game was consistent scoring by the home team and one big inning for Mines. MSU Denver jumped to an 8-0 lead after three complete innings of play. In the fourth inning, the Orediggers exploded for seven runs on six hits with zero errors. Bilter and Andrews hit singles, Tyler Hummel walked, Babock was hit by a pitch, and Trent Nielsen singled for the first three runs. Then, Tyler Easter drove in Babcock and Moeck plated Nielsen. Woolwine capped the surge by hitting a two-run home run while cutting the Roadrunners' lead to 8-7. Both teams exchanged a single run in the fifth. The sixth inning made the difference after Mines scored one and MSU Denver scored two. That made the final, 11-9 tally.

Game two featured a strong start by the visitors and a late rally from the Roadrunners. Woolwine, Babcock, Bilter, and Humphreys all came across the plate for Mines in the top of the first inning with Hummel smacking a double. Another run in the second inning and three in the third afforded the Orediggers a seemingly-comfortable, 8-1 lead. Woolwine contributed another home run as part of Mines' early rush. Unfortunately for the visitors, MSU Denver stacked nine unanswered across the bottom of the third and fourth innings. The Orediggers matched and surpassed the Roadrunners' ten runs thanks to a pair in the sixth frame. But, MSU Denver prevailed after plating a trio in the sixth as well. The game ended on a groundball double play in the top of the seventh inning.
