DENVER, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team played its series finale at MSU Denver on Sunday in downtown Denver and fell by a score of 9-6.
In the loss,
Jackson Babcock,
Evan Bilter, and
Tyler Hummel all produced multi-hit days. Babcock was 2-for-5 and scored one run. Bilter hit a home run on the way to one run and one RBI. Hummel had a double while scoring twice. Other hits for extra bases included a double from
Wayne Moeck and a home run from
Tyler Pina. Pina finished with two RBI.
Alex Honeyman (1-3) was the starting pitcher for the visiting team and took the defeat after just one inning of work.
Peter Lynch accounted for three innings of relief.
Sam Monk tossed the last four frames and struck out five while walking three. Helton (2-2) earned the win for the home team.
Mines (10-19, 5-7 RMAC) scored its six runs on 10 hits and benefitted from three fielding errors by MSU Denver (13-13, 5-3 RMAC). Four of the Orediggers' 10 hits included two doubles and two home runs. The Roadrunners stacked their nine runs on 10 hits which featured four doubles. The home team also stole three bases. Mines used three pitchers in the game who combined for six strikeouts, seven walks, and four hit batters. MSU Denver relied on four arms which totaled five strikeouts, four walks, zero hit batters, and a one-inning save for Swan.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mines scored first thanks to a Roadrunners' error in the field. However, MSU Denver responded with five unanswered runs. Two of those came in the first with two more in the second and one in the third. The Orediggers did plate two in the fourth thanks to Pina's two-run bomb. That long ball made the score 5-3 in favor of the home team. Four runs for the Roadrunners in the bottom of the fifth eventually proved to be enough for MSU Denver.
Jackson Woolwine drove in Moeck in the seventh and Bilter's solo home run in the eighth highlighted a late-game gasp by Mines. In the end, a wild pitch which allowed Hummel to score only allowed for a Roadrunners' save and nothing else.
