ALAMOSA, Colo. – A total of 29 runs came across home plate on Saturday afternoon at ASU Baseball Field as the Colorado School of Mines Baseball team dropped a 17-12 slugfest to Adams State.
Top performances for Mines (6-13, 1-1 RMAC) were led by three-hit days from
Jackson Woolwine,
Tyler Pina, and
Evan Bilter. Woolwine's trio of hits included a double and led to two runs, four RBI, and a stolen base. Pina smacked a double as well and drove in two runs. Bilter stacked up a trio of singles as the designated hitter. Five additional Orediggers scored two runs apiece. Dunagan tallied two RBI. The top hitter for Adams State (5-15, 1-1 RMAC) was Phil Carter. He went 3-for-4 with three home runs, three runs scored, and eight RBI. Braden Watkins added two home runs for the Grizzlies.
On the mound,
Grady Booth (0-4) was the visiting starter and pitcher of decision for the Orediggers.
Matthew Dobberthien,
Nicholas Spidel,
Peter Lynch,
Casey Thibault, and
Carter Gorling all provided innings out of the bullpen. Brian Walters (4-4) started and claimed the win following 5.2 innings of eight-hit, six-run (three earned) work. The aforementioned Carter earned a three-inning save despite giving up four runs on six hits. Overall, Mines' staff struck out three and walked five. Adams State's pitchers combined for three strikeouts and three walks. The Orediggers scored their 12 runs on 17 hits including six doubles. The Grizzlies plated 17 on 21 hits with seven home runs and two doubles.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Adams State started Saturday's snow-delayed contest by sprinkling six home runs across the first three innings. The result was a 14-0 lead as the game headed into the fourth frame. Mines still didn't score in the fourth, but Lynch and the Oredigger defense used two groundballs and a double play to hand ASU its first zero of the game. A trio of doubles of the bats of
Mason Andrews, Woolwine, and Pina provided the visitors their first three runs in the fifth inning, and Lynch retired the Grizzlies in order during the home half. A leadoff double by Bilter and a flurry of Adams State miscues highlighted a five-run sixth. Another ASU home run and one-run single made the score 17-8 after six complete innings of play.
Mines kept the pressure on right before the seventh-inning stretch. The Orediggers' turn at-bat started with a Hummel single which was followed by a Humphreys double, Andrews walk, Dunagan double, and Woolwine single. That outburst produced four more runs and pulled Mines within five runs at 17-12. At that point, somebody unplugged the bats and both teams went quiet. From the bottom of the seventh until the end of the game, the Orediggers and Grizzlies combined for zero runs on four hits and just six baserunners total. That lull spelled doom for Mines and clinched Adams State's first RMAC win of 2025.
