PUEBLO, Colo. –
Quincey Baum hit the game-winning three-pointer Thursday evening to cap a career scoring night as the Colorado School of Mines women's basketball team defeated CSU Pueblo on the road, 73-70.
Baum's pivotal three-pointer capped a career-high 17 points with four rebounds, three assists, and one steal. She was 8-for-11 from the floor and her only three misses were from long range. Teammate
Sofia Baldessari led all players in the game with 22 points and made it a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds while adding four steals and two assists.
Jenna Shandy and
Emma Sixta combined to score 26 points and hand out 11 assists. The home team had five score in double figures with 12 apiece from Seneya Martinez and Laci Roffle.
Mines (10-8, 5-2 RMAC) had six more rebounds than CSU Pueblo (8-7, 4-3 RMAC). The ThunderWolves blocked five shots and committed two fewer turnovers than the Orediggers. However, the visitors converted their forced turnovers into 25 points, while the home team only managed 15 points off turnovers. Both teams shot between 45-47 percent from the floor. The Pack was more efficient from three-point range with an 8-for-18 mark, but Mines' 31-percent mark from three-point range was offset by one more three-pointer. At the charity stripe, CSU Pueblo went 10-of-14 while the Orediggers were 6-of-12. Mines is now tied for fourth in the RMAC standings with UCCS.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In blunt terms, Mines stumbled out of the gate, playing its first road game since Dec. 20. The Orediggers only managed six points, and CSU Pueblo carried a 19-6 lead into the second quarter. A 22-18 margin in the second quarter helped Mines cut its deficit by four. Baum's eight points and six combined assists from
Emily Thomas and Sixta helped keep the Orediggers in the game. After halftime, the margin relatively maintained until The Pack spurted out an 8-0 run in 61 seconds and made the score 58-43.
Jade Leon's second-chance tip-in at the buzzer made it a 58-45, CSU Pueblo lead as the game headed into the final period.
Baldessari started the fourth quarter with a made three-pointer after a ThunderWolves' turnover. She added a free throw at 8:34 and Shandy drained her own three-pointer at 8:12 to cut Mines' deficit to six points at 58-52. The Oredigger run continued with two more Baldessari free throws. Those pulled the visitors within four points of CSU Pueblo. The Pack briefly stemmed the tied with a floater, but back-to-back three-pointers by Baldessari and Shandy tied the game at 60 with 6:11 left to play. After that, neither team led by more than four points. A Baldessari layup at the 1:10 mark provided Mines a 70-66 advantage. Then, CSU Pueblo made two free throws, forced a turnover, made a layup, and tied the score at 70 with 29 seconds on the clock. There was a jump ball which went to the ThunderWolves, but The Pack stepped out of bounds and turned it over to the Orediggers. Two seconds later, Baum found the bottom of the net off a Shandy pass and put Mines ahead, 73-70. Four seconds were not enough for CSU Pueblo to recover.
