MINES READIES TO HOST NCAA REGIONALS
Tickets are now on sale for the NCAA Division II Super Region VI Championships, which will be hosted by Mines at Lockridge Arena, the home of Mines basketball and volleyball, on Feb. 28. The one-day, four-mat meet, which qualifies wrestlers to the national championships, is returning to Golden for the first time since 2017. Fans can reserve their spot at tickets.minesathletics.com.Â
IN THE RANKINGS
The NWCA released its latest rankings on Thursday and Mines slipped one spot to #22, coincidentally tied at that spot with Colorado Mesa.
Cody Thompson, despite his unbeaten start to the season, fell one spot to #3 at 149 pounds, while CMU has two ranked competitors in #7 Owen Cline (157) and #8 Gabriel Carranza (197). In this week's OpenMat rankings, Mines is also #22 as a team with Thompson at #2 in his weight class along with
Jakob Smith (#15 at 174) and
Wyatt Reisz (#18 at 184).Â
THE HISTORY
Mines and Colorado Mesa are meeting for the 36th time, with CMU holding a 23-11-1 series lead but Mines having won five of the last seven and the last two duals. They first met in 1953. Last year, Mines won 23-15 in Golden to clinch the RMAC title, taking down three of the unbeaten Mavericks' five ranked entrants.Â
LEADING THE WAY
Three Orediggers appear in this week's lineup sporting unblemished season records led by
Cody Thompson (9-0) and
Mason Diel (8-0), with freshman
Ryan Espiritu (3-0) working back from injury.
Marcus Caro (12-7) leads the team in wins overall with both
Brandon Cody (10-2) and
Deringer Hollenbeck (10-7) sitting on 10 wins. Hollenbeck's six falls also leads the team. In duals, Thompson's 40 points generated from nine wins leads Mines with
Jakob Smith (33) and Diel (29) second and third, respectively, in dual points.Â
THE 50-WIN CLUB
Cody Thompson is Mines' active career leader in wins at 57-17, and
Wyatt Reisz could join him in the 50-win club this weekend as he sits 49-17 in his third season at Mines. Reisz is 6-3 this season wrestling as he has moved up from 174 pounds to wrestle at 184 and 197 over the past month.
AT THE HELM
Head Coach
Austin DeVoe is in his 12th season in charge of the Mines Wrestling program, having rebuilt the Orediggers into a national contender with three RMAC titles, eight all-Americans, and eight Academic All-Americans in his tenure. With 92 dual wins under his belt, Mines has had seven consecutive winning dual seasons including the only three double-digit win seasons in program history, including tying the program wins record in 2022-23 with an 11-2 record and surpassing it with 13 in 2024-25. On the national stage, Mines has had team success as well including an 11th-place finish in 2022 which was the program's best finish since the 1990s.Â
LOOKING AHEAD
Mines begins a stretch of three straight home duals next Thursday, Jan. 29 hosting Adams State at Volk Gym. The Orediggers will also host CSU Pueblo Feb. 6 in the Blaster's Brawl dual at Volk before facing off against Simon Fraser at Lockridge Arena on Feb. 13 in the leadup to the NCAA regional meet.
