GOLDEN, Colo. - #22 Colorado School of Mines wrapped up the regular season with an emphatic 39-7 win over Simon Fraser, wrestling at Lockridge Arena Friday night.
The Orediggers (11-2), competing in the home of Mines basketball and volleyball for the first time since 2015, prepped for the upcoming NCAA regional meet with a comprehensive victory that included five bonus-point wins to start the meet among seven overall.
Jake Goodin and
Cody Thompson had falls while
Ryan Espiritu and
Mason Diel worked technical falls, and
Jakob Smith and
Xander Sweeney added majors to
Timber Parlin's decision in building an insurmountable Oredigger lead.
After starting the meet with
Laith Ibrahim's forfeit win at 285, the lineup flipped over to 125 where Goodin only needed 1:20 to pin Ezekiel Ivri. Sweeney cruised 15-2 over Arad Ahangi at 133, and Espiritu earned a 21-5 tech fall with one second remaining in a dominant first period against Markus Lee at 141.
Wrestling his final dual for the Orediggers, Thompson stuck Khalin Radev in only 1:42 to give Mines a 27-0 lead. The Red Leafs would win the next two weights, however, first at 157 where Gordon Gibson held off a furious comeback by
Brandon Cody in a high-scoring 15-12 decision, and then at 165 where Hugh Wheeler topped
Marcus Caro 17-3.
Smith got Mines back on track with an 8-0 shutout of Arashk Rasti at 174, and Parlin controlled his 184 bout in a 15-8 win over Owen Gudmundson.
Mason Diel wrapped up his dual career with several late takedowns to turn a major into a tech against Tejvir Dhinsa, 19-3.
Mines improved to 7-0 all-time against the Red Leafs, who are the NCAA's only Canadian member.
The Orediggers will host the NCAA Super Region VI Championships at Lockridge Arena on Feb. 28.
