GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines qualified
Cody Thompson,
Jakob Smith, and
Wyatt Reisz to nationals as part of a strong team performance as they hosted the 2026 NCAA Division II Super Region VI Championship at Lockridge Arena.
Thompson won the 149 pounds bracket, Smith was the 174-pound runner-up, and Reisz battled to third place at 184 to earn their way to Sioux Falls in two weeks' time. The Orediggers, hosting the event for the first time since 2017, had eight placers out of 10 weight classes.
Mines finished fourth with 95.5 points, a two-spot improvement from 2025 and best regional finish since 2022. Nebraska-Kearney won the team title at 142 points followed by Adams State's 124 and Chadron State's 100.
Thompson earned his second career regional title thanks to a flawless 3-0 day that included a pin of Alex Castenada of Colorado Mesa, a 12-9 decision over Highlands' Sebastian Freeman, and then a 14-5 major decision against Adams State's Angel Flores in the final. It sends Thompson, the 2024 national finalist at 149, to his second NCAA Championships.
Smith, after two consecutive fourth-place finishes, punched his first trip to nationals with his second-place performance at 174. Smith was utterly dominant through his first three matches, outscoring his opponents 37-3 and not allowing an offensive point; in the final against UNK's Otgonbayer Batsuuri, a two-time juco national champion, he fought in an 8-2 loss.
Reisz, who qualified for NCAAs at 174 a year ago, came back from a semifinal loss to take third in a 4-1 day. Reisz had two majors and two decisions on the day but none more important than a hard-fought 7-2 win over Vanguard's Marquize Brown in the placing match.
Mines had three fourth-place finishers in
Jake Goodin,
Mason Diel, and
Laith Ibrahim, as well. Goodin surprised #7-ranked Quade Smith of Chadron State in a quarterfinal pin at 125 pounds to move into the semis; after a loss there he wrestled back to eventually face Smith again in the third-place bout, where the CSC wrestler got his pin back over the Mines freshman.
Diel went 3-2 and made it to the semis before his first loss; he then beat Sage Harrison of Western Colorado 4-3, but faced Adams State's Ben Tonnessen for a second time (after a 4-1 win in the quarters) where the Grizzly 197-pounder turned the tables 4-3 in the third-place bout. It was a similar story for Ibrahim at 285, hit with an early quarterfinal loss to Chadron State's Eli Reese but wrestling all the way back with three straight wins to face Reese again in the third-place contest, where Reese won a 2-1 heartbreaker. Ibrahim went 4-2 on the day.
Brandon Cody finished sixth at 157 in a 2-3 tournament, and
Ryan Espiritu was also sixth at 141 after suffering a medical forfeit in a competitive match against defending national champion Johnny Lopez of San Francisco State in the quarterfinals.
Izaiah Padilla went 1-2 at 133, and
Marcus Caro was 0-2 at 165 to round out Mines' lineup.
The NCAA will make its nationals field official this week before the meet takes place March 13-14 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
