SIOUX FALLS, S.D.
- Cody Thompson and Wyatt Reisz locked down all-America status as they remain alive after the first day of the 2026 NCAA Division II Men's Wrestling Championships.

Thompson moved into Saturday's semifinals with a 2-0 day, while Reisz used a dramatic overtime takedown to earn his podium spot and keep wrestling in consolations. Jakob Smith started the day with a major upset but fell out of the tournament after a 1-2 Friday.

Thompson, the third seed at 149 pounds, handled his business in a weight class where the top four seeds held up. The Oredigger senior beat Central Oklahoma's Bam West 10-2 to start, then scored a tilt and two escapes to overcome Glenville State's Gabriel Onorato 8-5 in the quarterfinals. Thompson will face Wisconsin-Parkside's Jalen Spuhler - who he beat in the 2024 quarterfinals - in Saturday morning's semis, with a chance to head to the final Saturday night. For Thompson, who was a finalist in 2024, it is his second all-America honor.

Reisz bounced back from an opening-round loss to earn his podium spot the harder way, going 2-1 on the first day of the tournament. Reisz lost a close 4-2 decision to #4-seeded Damon Ashworth of Central Missouri to start, but blanked West Liberty's Oliver Byerly 4-0 and then took Central Oklahoma's Branson Britten to overtime where his takedown not only kept him wrestling, but secured his first career all-America honor. Reisz will next wrestle Gannon's Patrick Jackson in the consolation quarterfinals; a win ensures sixth or better, a loss sends him to the seventh-place bout.

Smith opened the day at 174 with one of the tournament's biggest upsets, beating second-seeded Coy Gunderson of Augustana 9-4 on a third-period takedown to nearfall-4. He was dropped into wrestlebacks on a 9-6 decision against San Francisco State's Kydyn Lima, and St. Cloud State's Bryce Dagel prevailed 6-1 in the consolation bracket.

Saturday's action begins at 10 a.m. CT with the semis and remainder of the consolation bracket; finals take place at 7 p.m. CT.
