On Thursday, February 15, Mines Athletics and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee hosted the February visit for the Mines Athletics Reading Program, Minds in Motion with Mines, at Mitchell Elementary and Maple Grove Elementary, a community outreach opportunity allowing Mines student-athletes to read to and interact with the elementary school students.

The February visit at Mitchell and Maple Grove was another great success and featured members of the Football and Volleyball teams. The outing was coordinated by SAAC leaders Kyle Cox (football) and Hailey Babcock (volleyball).  Kyle and Hailey were joined by Football volunteers including Nick Bulleigh, Robert Gonzalez, Isaac Harker, Riley Hoff, Jacob Lopez, Riley MillerBrody OliverZach Peterson, RJ Phillips, and Niko Thomas.

All Mines Athletics teams are involved in this new SAAC reading outreach endeavor, taking place once per month and led by Sarah Berude (swimming), LaRose Currie (volleyball) and Liz Tomon (women's basketball).  Each Mines Athletics team will visit each school for one hour on a designated date, allowing all athletes the opportunity to work with and mentor community youth in a group-learning and team-building environment.  Visits consist of 30 minutes of reading (sport and team-related books with inspiring/motivational themes) and 30 minutes of physical activities.  Mines teams meet with two classes at each school, totaling 50 students per school per monthly visit.

Upcoming Mines Reading Program dates at Mitchell Elementary and Maple Grove Elementary include:
  • Wednesday, March 14 | Men's and Women's Soccer (both schools)
  • Wednesday, April 19 | Wrestling (Mitchell) and Men's & Women's Cross Country (Maple Grove)
