GOLDEN, Colo. – Cameron Maxey drove in the winning run for the Colorado School of Mines Baseball team Friday with a walk as the Orediggers walked off St. Edward's 11-10 in a come-from-behind, home-opening victory at Jim Darden Field.
Maxey came off the bench as a pinch runner and finished 0-for-0 with one run and one RBI.
Jace Selsor and
Mikey Gangwish led Mines' offense as both went 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI. Gangwish hit his first home run of the season and Selsor belted a triple and a double.
Colton Wardle also came up big for the Orediggers with three hits and three runs.
On the mound,
Walter Pennington (0-1) made the start but did not factor in the decision after pitching five innings with six runs on seven hits and five strikeouts.
Gabe Garvens (2-0) earned the victory in the second appearance of his career, pitching 1.2 innings of one-run, two-hit baseball.
Owen Pigati also appeared out of the bullpen and gave Mines 2.1 innings of work.
St. Edward's (3-3) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening frame with three doubles. Mines (3-1) responded in the bottom of the first inning with Gangwish's home run to right-center field to make it 3-2, SEU. The Hilltoppers grew their lead to 8-3 with three runs in the third and two in the sixth.
The Orediggers fired back with two runs in the sixth inning, two in the seventh and two in the eighth to make it 9-9 after SEU scored one run in the top of eight. Blake Alexander gave St. Edward's a 10-9 lead in the top of nine with a solo home run. Mines scored the walk off after an intentional walk to
Trevor Kehe and back-to-back walks to
Joe Popp and Maxey.
