Mines Clinches Series with Doubleheader Sweep of CSU-Pueblo

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team swept its first doubleheader of the season Saturday with wins of 11-4 and 11-2 over CSU-Pueblo, clinching a series win at Jim Darden Field.

Mikey Gangwish was on fire at the plate as he went 6-for-8 on the day with two home runs and a triple, scoring four runs and driving in four more. Jace Selsor was 5-for-8 with two doubles and his second home run of the season while scoring three with four RBI. Trevor Kehe and Derek Daly also hit bombs for the Orediggers.

On the mound, Tyler Blomster (1-0) was nearly unhittable in game two as he allowed just two baserunners in his first start of the season. He struck out 10 batters in 5.0 innings of two-hit, shutout baseball with no walks. Walter Pennington (2-1) got the start and the win in game one behind 6.0 innings of three-run, six-hit work with six strikeouts. For CSU-Pueblo, Jason Lighthall (1-1) got the loss in game one, while Nate Dominguez (1-2) wore it game two.

Game One – Mines 11, CSU-Pueblo 4
CSU-Pueblo (9-11, 1-6 RMAC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead on the Orediggers (10-4, 6-1 RMAC) with one run in the second and two in the third inning. Mines was shutout through three but could not be held down.

Kehe opened the bottom of the fourth frame by legging out an infield single and Gangwish opened the flood gates with a two-run moon shot to right field. Daly followed that up with his first home run of the year to make it back-to-back jacks for Mines. Consecutive doubles by John Howard and Joe Popp gave the Orediggers a 4-3 lead and they would not look back from there.

The Orediggers manufactured four more runs in the fifth inning sparked by a ThunderWolves' error. Gangwish followed up with a single and John Howard's double sank the nail. Mines capped off the game with three runs in the sixth as Kehe went long to right field.

Game Two – Mines 11, CSU-Pueblo 2
Mines' defense set the tone in game two as it sat CSU-Pueblo down in order in the first inning. The Orediggers put up one run in their opening frame thanks to a wild pitch by the ThunderWolves.

Blomster recorded three strikeouts in the second inning and two more in the third frame to keep CSU-Pueblo off the board. The flood gates opened in the fourth inning again as Mines plated eight runs on seven straight hits including three consecutive singles, one triple and two home runs.

Single runs in the fifth and sixth proved to be insurance for Mines as Blomster struck out the side in the fifth inning. Jake Roberts and Owen Starr locked down the final two frames with two strikeouts and just two runs.
