GOLDEN, Colo. – Sophomore
Walter Pennington hit his second and third home runs of the year Friday as the Colorado School of Mines baseball team took down New Mexico Highlands 8-1 in its RMAC opener.
Pennington finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI.
Colton Wardle led all players with three hits, going 3-for-5 at the plate while scoring once and driving a run in.
Derek Daly also finished with multiple hits as he collected two in four at-bats with one run and one RBI.
On the mound,
Drew Burman (3-0) got the start and the win as he tossed 7.0 innings, giving up one run on five hits with a career-high nine strikeouts. For NMHU, Cameron Polich (0-1) was dealt the loss in his first decision of the year.
Nick Gardner and
Jake Roberts both gave Mines one inning of scoreless relief apiece.
Mines (5-3, 1-0 RMAC) struck first with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Wardle led off with a single and then stole second base.
Trevor Kehe made it 1-0 with a RBI double. Highlands (4-9, 0-1 RMAC) tied it up in the top of the second with a double down the right-field line.
Pennington led off the bottom of the second frame with his second home run of the year and the Orediggers would not look back from there. Two more runs in the second, one in the third and two in the fifth helped Mines coast to victory and an undefeated record in conference play.
