COLORADO SPRINGS – Walter Pennington and
Tyler Blomster both pitched complete games Friday as the Colorado School of Mines Baseball team swept its doubleheader with UCCS, winning 9-4 and 4-3.
Pennington (4-1) tossed his second straight complete-game victory behind 7.0 innings of four-run, five-hit baseball while striking out three Mountain Lions. Blomster struck out six over 7.0 innings while surrendering just three runs on seven hits.
At the plate,
John Howard (2), Pennington (10),
Joe Popp (7) and
Jace Selsor (3) all hit home runs for the Orediggers. Selsor led the team with three runs scored and finished the day hitting .375 with two RBI.
Derek Daly,
Mikey Gangwish and Howard all hit over .500 over the two games. A total of five Orediggers scored multiple runs and five more recorded multiple RBI.
Game One – Mines 9, UCCS 4
Mines (18-7, 11-4 RMAC) struck first thanks to a RBI double from Gangwish in the top of the first inning. However, UCCS (16-15, 10-9 RMAC) took the lead with two runs in the second frame.
The Orediggers came up big in the fourth with four runs on five hits. Howard led the inning off with a home run and Pennington helped his own cause with a two-run shot, driving in Popp.
Trevor Kehe sparked a four-run sixth inning with a leadoff double. Daly and Gangwish also doubled in the frame as Mines clinched the victory.
Game Two – Mines 4, UCCS 3
Game two was all Orediggers as the visitors jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to Popp's two-out bomb in the second inning. Two more runs in the third put Mines in the driver's seat, 3-0. Selsor hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth to make it 4-0.
UCCS scored three unanswered runs with one in the fourth and two in the sixth. However, Blomster shut down any hope of a comeback with a one-hit, shutout seventh inning.
NOTABLES
- Blomster is 3-0 in his first three starts of the season.
- Kehe has reached base safely in every game this season.
- Mines has not lost a single series this season.
- Pennington's 10 home runs are a team-high as he ranks top-5 in the country in slugging.
- As a team, the Orediggers slugged .672 in the doubleheader with four home runs and seven doubles.
- Mines did not commit one error in 14 innings Friday, raising its fielding percentage to .972 on the season.

Daniel Ciraula contributed to 16 of the Orediggers' putouts without an error.
- The Orediggers are 9-0 when they score in the first inning.
