GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team advanced in the winners' bracket of the RMAC Tournament Thursday as it scratched out 10 runs (three earned) in a 10-6 win over CSU-Pueblo at Sam Suplizio Field.
Mines' opportunistic offense was led by
Derek Daly and
Griffin Jones. The duo combined for six RBI on four hits with two runs, finishing 4-for-5 on the day.
Joe Popp and
Jace Selsor scored two runs each as seven Orediggers came across the plate.
On the mound,
Tyler Blomster (8-0) made the start and got the win thanks to 6.0 innings of work with five strikeouts.
Matt Martin appeared in middle relief with 1.1 innings out of the bullpen and
Gabe Garvens closed it out for his fifth save of the year. Danny Honorof (3-5) took the loss for CSU-Pueblo.
The Orediggers (34-14) fell into an early hole as the Thunderwolves (28-22) plated two runs in the top of the second inning. However, Mines put up back-to-back zeros on defense and evened the score with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to a CSU-Pueblo error.
CSU-Pueblo retook the lead with a lone run in the top of the fifth before the Orediggers' offense exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Colton Wardle sparked the rally as he forced a Thunderwolves' error to lead off the inning and
John Howard tied the game with a double to right-center field.
Daniel Ciraula and
Trevor Kehe continued the rally with back-to-back walks, loading the bases. Then, Selsor made it 4-3 with a single up the middle. Singles for Daly and Jones capped off the scoring as Mines jumped out to an 8-3 lead.
The Thunderwolves attempted a comeback with one run in the sixth inning and two in the eighth. However, Martin and Garvens provided blue-collar relief out of the bullpen, while the offense added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth frame, thanks to an RBI triple from Jones as Mines clinched the victory.
