GOLDEN, Colo. – Seventy-seven current and former Colorado School of Mines student-athletes were awarded degrees in Mines' spring commencement ceremonies on May 10 and 11. Mines Athletics was proud to once again host both the graduate and undergraduate ceremonies in Lockridge Arena and Marv Kay Stadium, respectively.

Sixteen Orediggers earned master's degrees Thursday night and 61 were handed bachelor's degrees on Friday morning. One student-athlete – track & field's Amanda Giles – was a dual-degree recipient in applied mathematics and statistics and computer science. Combined with 25 December degree recipients, Mines Athletics produced 102 total graduates in 2017-18.

Every Mines team had at least one graduate, led by 11 members of the men's track & field and cross country programs. Eight Orediggers were absent, but they had a good excuse – baseball's Drew Burman, Jake Englehart, Griffin Jones, Matt Martin, Cameron Maxey, Max Moxley, Jake Roberts, and Caleb Thomas received their diploma covers on the road as they continued play in the RMAC Tournament in Grand Junction. The team participated in a special commencement ceremony via a video from President Paul Johnson, Vice President Dan Fox, and Athletic Director David Hansburg.

Student-athlete graduates also received numerous awards. From the academic departments, women's soccer's Devon Dunmire earned the George T. Merideth Award for outstanding work in geophysics, baseball's Nathan Smythe received the H.G. Washburn Award from mining engineering, and track and cross country standout Chloe Cook was the recipient of the McIver-Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Faculty Award. Molly Reicher of track and cross country and Matt Martin of baseball were two of three Mines graduates to be given Colorado Engineering Council Awards for excellence in scholarship, while Reicher and baseball's Griffin Jones were named the President's Senior Scholar Athlete Award winners, which is given to two graduating student-athletes who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and scholastic achievement. Dunmire, Martin, and men's swimming's Dom Smith were named to the Tau Beta Pi honor society, and women's soccer's Emily Garnier to the Blue Key Honor Society.

In all, of the 61 undergraduates, five graduated summa cum laude, 10 magna cum laude, and 13 cum laude.

The group was just as accomplished in competition as they were in the classroom. The Class of 2018 included 47 who have been RMAC team or individual champions; 43 who have appeared in the NCAA Championships either with a team or as individuals; 11 All-Americans; two RMAC Academic Athletes of the Year; one Academic All-American; and six members of the 2015 NCAA champion men's cross country team.

As has become tradition, Mines student-athletes led the crowd in the fight song, "The Mining Engineer," to conclude the undergraduate ceremony.
