GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines ran its win streak to eight games with a wire-to-wire 86-58 win over RMAC rival Westminster on Friday.
The Orediggers (9-3, 6-0 RMAC) started the new year off right with dominating game at both ends of the floor, shooting 58 percent in the second half while out-rebounding the Griffins (4-6, 2-4 RMAC) by a 41-24 margin.
Mason Baker and
Michael Glen led the way for Mines as Baker scored a game-high 16 points with seven rebounds, and Glen had 15 to go with seven boards.
Ben Boone added a career-high 13 off the bench as the Mines reserves contributed 30 points, including
Joe Miks' 10.
Mines never trailed as Baker hit the game's opening shot as part of a 17-6 run to open up, and the home team was never seriously bothered except for a 15-2 run by the Griffins late in the first half. With Mines up 32-16 with 7:40 to go before the half, Alec Monson and Jai Jai Ely pushed Westminster to cut the Oredigger lead to 34-31 before Mines ended the half on a 9-2 run to be up 43-33.
Any doubt was erased as
Brendan Sullivan keyed an 11-4 run to open the second half, slamming down a dunk before canning a three-pointer to put Mines ahead 53-37 less than four minutes into the period. The defense then clamped down with a 5:55 scoreless stretch for Westminster as Mines built its advantage to 72-46 with 5:30 to go; the Orediggers won going away with their final margin of 28 points the largest lead of the game.
