GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team fell to #5-ranked Colorado Mesa on Friday by a score of 9-1 due to two big innings from the Mavericks.
True freshman
Wayne Moeck provided most of the Orediggers' offensive production, going 2-for-4 with a double.
I-Ly Hsue scored Mines' lone run and notched a hit as well.
Luke Folsom was responsible for the RBI.
Danny McDermott and
Jason Hall also tallied base knocks for the Orediggers.
Drew Hill (0-2) started on the mound and took the decision for Mines after 5.2 innings of eight-run (six earned), eight-hit baseball. Hill did strikeout five batters.
Brayden Weyer closed the game out of the bullpen, tossing 2.1 innings of one-run, two-hit relief.
Mines (0-5, 0-5 RMAC) finished the game with five hits and found six combined strikeouts from the pitching staff. Colorado Mesa (6-1, 3-0 RMAC) benefitted from two doubles and two home runs on the way to 10 hits. The Mavericks did committed two errors in the field but offset the miscues with 14 strikeouts from the pitching staff. The loss marks the Orediggers' fifth straight while CMU now has six straight wins.
HOW IT HAPPENED
As hinted in the headline, two big innings made the difference in the game. The home team used a five-run second inning to take a 5-0 lead. Three straight singles and a double later in the frame fueled the outburst. Colorado Mesa also carried a no-hit bid into the fourth inning before Moeck put an end to it with a leadoff double. Then, the Orediggers ended the shutout in the sixth after a leadoff single from Hsue and a sacrifice-fly from Folsom. However, that was all the scoring for Mines as three runs in the bottom half of the sixth made another crooked number and the final tally.
