SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Eight doubles through two games helped the #17 Colorado School of Mines Baseball team sweep its doubleheader at Cal State San Marcos by scores of 17-14 and 7-1.
Alex Bumpus accounted for three of the eight two-baggers in two starts on Saturday. He finished the day batting .400 with four runs and five RBI.
Taylor White ended as the Orediggers' top hitter with a .750 average in two games and one start. White tallied one run and one RBI on three singles. Mines' deadly duo was
I-Ly Hsue and
Wayne Moeck. They combined for eight runs on 10 hits including two doubles and one home run which resulted in eight RBI.
Keene Tanaka played one game in the doubleheader and hit .667 with one run and two RBI on two hits. Also notable were six total runs between
Caden Bonds and
Danny McDermott.
Nic Roma, McDermott and
Adam Houghtaling all notched doubles as well.
Winning pitchers for the Orediggers were
Rodney Gregg (1-0) and
Tyler Blomster (3-0). Gregg earned the win on the front end thanks to 2.0 innings of one-run, one-hit relief. His lone run was unearned as he struck out one and walked one. Blomster started game two and tossed 5.0 innings of one-run, six-hit baseball. Like Gregg, Blomster's one run allowed was unearned. He struck out three and walked two.
Brayden Weyer started game one but did not factor in the decision as he departed after 3.0 innings.
Zachary Kriethe closed both games and posted a 0.00 ERA with two strikeouts in 2.2 innings of flawless relief.
Blake Ripp and
Jackson Bakovich also came out of the bullpen for Mines.
The Orediggers (11-0) hit .378 as a team and slugged .527 which helped the Orediggers overcome five errors in the field. Cal State San Marcos (2-5) committed five errors in the field as well, but still produced a .319 batting average including two doubles and two triples. In total, Saturdays' doubleheader featured 39 runs on 50 hits and 10 errors in 16 innings of baseball. After the dust had settled, the Oredigger pitching staff wore a 6.75 ERA while Mines' offense dealt CSUSM a 12.38 ERA. Oredigger pitchers totaled 11 strikeouts in 16 innings as the hitters only fanned five times in the same span. Capping it of was a 16-3 margin in bases on balls which fell in favor of Mines.
GAME ONE: Mines 17, Cal State San Marcos 14
Six combined errors underscored 31 runs on 30 hits in the front end of Saturday's doubleheader. Misleading was Mines' pure, 2-for-2 start featuring Hsue's leadoff double followed by Moeck's two-run home run. It marked the only home run of the day and of the series. That set the tone for at least one run in every inning except the sixth as Cal State San Marcos rallied back to a 5-2 lead thanks to one run in the second and four in the third.
Both teams exchanged a single run in the fourth with Mines committing another error to make CSUMS' unearned. After that, the Orediggers took the run for good – exploding for four runs in the fifth frame, five in the seventh and five more in the ninth. Doubles highlighted the visitors' rally as Bumpus smacked a pair of two-run doubles in the fifth and seventh frames while Moeck nailed a one-run double in the ninth. Cal State San Marcos put together its best effort for a comeback victory by hitting a three-run home run in the eighth inning and another in the ninth inning. However, Kriethe stepped in as a stopper and shut it down with a groundout and a fly ball.
GAME ONE: Mines 7, Cal State San Marcos 1
Saturday's snowball fight in California (don't overthink it) continued into the third game of the series and the back end of the day's doubleheader. Each team added an error apiece to the box score in the opening frame and both errors resulted in runs. The difference was Houghtaling's RBI double in the top half that afforded Mines a 2-1 advantage after one complete inning of play. Blomster returned to the mound in the top of the second and relied on his defense to shut down the Cougars for the next four innings with two strikeouts, eight ground balls and one fly ball.
The Oredigger offense offered help to their starting pitcher by way of one run in the third, two in the fourth and two more in the fifth inning. White plated Moeck to make it 3-1. A Bumpus double and Folsom single made it 5-1. McDermott's double and Hsue's single in the fifth inning capped the scoring at 7-1. Kriethe came back for more in the sixth and seventh frames and retired Cal State San Marcos – in order.
