GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Thursday morning's prelims at the 2023 RMAC Swimming & Diving Championships saw the Oredigger men and women punch 27 tickets to the evening finals.
 
Charles Burroughs highlighted the session for Mines, earning the top seed in the men's 100-fly. The Orediggers also combined to produce five different NCAA "B" times including Jordan Tierney's 50-free time trial which she finished in 23.83 seconds.
 
Swimming finals in the 100-fly, 400-IM, 200-free, and 400-medley relays will begin at 5 p.m. on Thursday evening and stream live on the RMAC Network.
 
100-BUTTERFLY
Thursday's first event was the 100-fly, one of Mines' best races as the Oredigger women went 7-for-7 and the men put six into the evening session. For the women, Annie Osmun (56.27), Kylie VanderMeer (58.48), and Savannah Karas (58.59) earned berths in the "A" finals by virtue of top-eight finishes in prelims. Emma Neuroth (59.07), Jorie Selig (59.34), Sophia Buhr (59.38), and Cameryn Schmidt (1:00.34) each earned a chance to add to the team score in the "B" finals.
 
The men's side, as mentioned above, was led by Burroughs who earned the #1 seed with a NCAA "B" time of 48.48. Seth Krause joined him in the "A" finals by swimming  49.54. Orediggers earning spots in the "B" finals were Luca Burns (50.37), Sam LaPrade (50.51), Joe Peak (50.54), and Jack Engler (51.23). Braden Hunt also raced to a time of 52.23. In exhibition, Max Waring (49.82) produced a time that would have sent him to "A" finals while Mattie Oberley posted an exhibition time of 52.90. That finished a session which saw Mines take up 13 of a potential 32 spots in the 100-fly finals.
 
400-INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY
Mines carried its qualifying ways into the 400-IM. Oredigger women were perfect once again as all three competitors finished #16 or better. Olivia Kisow (4:35.67) and Isabella Bono (4:41.96) were inside the top eight. Sophia Buhr earned a "B" berth thanks to her 4:50.27. Mines' men were also perfect, led by Ronan Lauinger's #2 seed in a NCAA "B" time of 3:59.32. Braden Whitmarsh added to the NCAA "B" times by finishing #5 in prelims at a clip of 4:03.43. Andres Saa (4:06.09) rounded out the "A" finalists while Scott Reeder (4:07.06) made it 4-of-4 Orediggers into the finals by taking #9.
 
Three other men appeared in exhibition in the 400-IM. Josh Lee (4:15.79) and Nathan O'Neil (4:17.25) touched in times that would have qualified for finals while Oberley (4:26.99) appeared in his second event of the day.
 
200-FREESTYLE
The final event of the morning saw Meghan Slowey give herself another chance to score and earn hardware along with a RMAC title. She slipped into the "A" finals of the 200-free by taking #7 in prelims in a time of 1:54.71. Maggie Wells (1:55.23) and Emi Jedryka (1:55.60) made evening reservations as well in the "B" finals. Kerrigan Hemp (1:57.38) also had a season best in the 200-free, as did Kylie VanderMeer (1:58.32).
 
Michael Kietzman was tops for the Oredigger men thanks to a blazing 1:40.97 to get him into "A" finals. It was also a NCAA "B" time, the last of the morning for Mines. Joe Peak (1:41.50), Gavin Moore (1:41.57), Jakson Winn (1:41.84), and Jaron O'Grady (1:43.22) stuffed the 200-free "B" finals with Orediggers. Gavin Gilmore (1:45.27) had a season best by nearly four seconds. Jake Sherman also posted a 1:45.28 and Braden Hunt turned in a 1:47.86. Exhibition action featured Nick Delany (1:43.81) and Joe Hutchinson (1:53.72).
