Oredigger Bats Quieted by Quincy

QUINCY, Ill. – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team suffered a 20-4, run-rule loss on Friday in the series opener against Quincy.

In defeat, Tyler Hummel carried the hot bat for Mines (5-9). He went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Luke Parker provided the only hit for extra bases, going 1-for-1 with a double and a run scored. Ryan Vermeer and Mason Andrews both scored as well. Jackson Babcock, Trent Nielsen, and Andrews collected the remaining RBI. Also notable on offense was a stolen base by Jackson Woolwine. Peter Lynch (0-2) was the Orediggers' starting pitcher and took the loss after surrendering eight runs on eight hits. Nick Lacson, Nicholas Spidel, and Cade Burghardt all provided work from the bullpen. Ruffner (1-1) was the winning pitcher for Quincy (4-7).

Mines was error-free in the field, but only had seven hits. Only one of those hits was for extra bases. The Hawks batted .500 and hit two home runs. They also fielded 1.000. On the mound, Oredigger pitchers struck out seven and walked six. Quincy arms totaled four strikeouts compared to five walks. According to the official scorer, all runs were earned.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A two-run home run by Quincy started the scoring in the home half of the first inning. When the game reached the end of the second frame, QU already owned an 8-0 lead. Babcock, the defending national hitter of the week kept Mines from being shut out by driving in Hummel. Then, the Hawks added 10 more runs before the Orediggers scored again. This time, in the top of the fifth, Hummel plated Andrews on a one-run single. Andrews made it two unanswered runs for the visitors with his RBI walk in the sixth inning. Another Quincy home run during the sixth put the icing on the cake for the home team. Nielsen made the final tally with his RBI single that scored Parker in the top of the seventh inning.

NOTABLES
- Let's be honest, there's nothing notable about a 20-4 loss.
- But, Babcock has recorded a hit in seven straight games. So there is something notable.
- Oredigger Head Coach Robby Bales is now 151-114 in his seventh season leading Mines.
