QUINCY, Ill. – Saturday's doubleheader brought a pair of close games between the Colorado School of Mines Baseball team and Quincy. The first game went to the Hawks, 10-9, after 12 innings. Game two of the day featured an 8-6 comeback victory for QU.
Across the two games,
Jackson Woolwine and
Evan Bilter totaled four hits apiece. Woolwine scored three times, walked three times, notched one doubles, and stole three bases. Bilter scored four times and had a double as well. Also notable was three hits and double off the bat of
Trent Nielsen who added one run and three RBI. The starting pitchers were
Alex Honeyman and
Gray St. Amant. Neither factored in their respective decision.
Sam Monk (0-1) wore the first loss and
Matthew Dobberthien took the second. Manship and Mueller were the winning pitchers. Schultz earned a save. Both teams had five errors each in the second game of the day and third of the series as Mines dropped to 5-11 and Quincy improved to 6-7.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mines struck first to start the day thanks to Nielsen's two-run double in the second inning. Woolwine and Bilter both scored in the third, giving the Orediggers a 4-0 lead. That advantage quickly dissipated when Quincy exploded for seven runs in the third and two in the fourth. Mines' 9-4 deficit didn't faze the visitors. Moeck drove in
Mason Andrews and Bilter in the sixth inning. The seventh, and final scheduled frame, was filled with QU errors which led to three Oredigger runs and a tie game. Extra innings saw
Grady Booth and Mines' defense stack zeroes all the way through the 11th frame. A double play ended the visiting half of the 12th, and a leadoff home run in the bottom of the inning ended the game.
Game two of the day and the third of the series had the Orediggers facing a three-run hole after three complete innings. That turned into a five-run deficit after the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth frame, Nielsen sparked a Mines rally. Six runs on seven hits and one error later, the visitors owned a 6-5 lead after Woolwine,
Jackson Babcock,
Tyler Pina, Nielsen, Bilter, and Andrews all scored. Unfortunately for the Orediggers, the Hawks ground out two runs in the sixth, and that was all they needed.
