Orediggers Falter in Finale at Quincy

QUINCY, Ill. – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team suffered a 7-1 loss on Sunday in their series finale at Quincy.

Jackson Woolwine finished 1-for-3 with a triple and a run. He also walked twice. Trent Nielsen recorded one hit and one RBI. Canon Humphreys smacked a double. Jackson Babcock, Evan Bilter, and Wayne Moeck each notched a single. Will Niles (0-1) started on the mound and took the loss due to five runs on six hits. He did stack up nine strikeouts compared to one walk across 5.0 innings. Sam Monk and Cade Burghardt came out of the bullpen, and Burhardt pitched one flawless inning with three strikeouts. Draeger (2-1) was the winning pitcher and Reinholz earned the save.

As a team, Mines (5-12) recorded six hits including two for extra bases. The Orediggers also walked five times and only struck out six times. Quincy (7-7) forced its guests to leave nine runners on base. That offset Mines' pitching staff which combined for 14 strikeouts and only one walk. The Hawks scored their seven runs on 11 hits including a double and a home run. Two fielding errors in the game both went against the home team.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Woolwine started the entire game by hitting a triple to center field. Nielsen's one-out single brought Woolwine across the plate. It ended up being Mines' only run of the game. Niles and the Oredigger defense did their best through four innings. The true-freshman hurler struck out one in the first inning and teamed up with Nielsen and Humphreys to pick a runner off. Nile then struck out three in the second, one in the third, and another in the fourth. A leadoff single and a double in the home half of the fourth allowed Quincy to tie the game.

Niles technically struck out the side in the fifth inning, but the third swing-and-miss came on a wild pitch and the runner reached base. The next batter hit a two-run home run for a 3-1, Hawks' lead. That was the start of the end for Mines. Quincy scored three runs in the sixth frame and another in the seventh as the Oredigger bats went quiet. Mines' only offense the rest of the game was a Woolwine walk and a Bilter single, making the 7-1 lead good for QU.

NOTABLES
- Niles' start on Sunday was the first of his collegiate career, as was Luke Parker's. Parker started the game at third base.
- Woolwine legged out his sixth triple as an Oredigger, and his two walks pushed him to 71 free passes at Mines.
- Humphreys is up to 18 doubles in less than two seasons with the Orediggers.
- Babcock and Nielsen have reached base safely in 11 straight games.
- Oredigger Head Coach Robby Bales is now 151-117 in his seventh season leading Mines.
