ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team opened Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play with a 5-4 victory at Adams State on Friday afternoon.
Gray St. Amant (2-2) was the starting pitcher for Mines (6-12, 1-0 RMAC). He surrendered just three runs on four hits with five strikeouts and one walk on the way to earning the win.
Seaver Newby (2) claimed the save after tossing the final two frames.
Sam Monk also came out of the bullpen and provided one inning of one-hit, shutout relief. At the plate,
Jackson Babcock notched two hits including a solo home run.
Tyler Hummel recorded two doubles on his way to three hits. Rounding out the Oredigger highlights were a double from
Tyler Pina and stolen bases by
Jackson Woolwine,
Evan Bilter, and
Mason Andrews. Mines' pitching staff combined for only one walk. Cesar Loma (4-5) was the starting pitcher for Adams State (4-15, 0-1 RMAC) and took the loss. The Grizzlies' arms walked five batters.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mines scored first thanks to Pina's RBI double. However, Adams State started its half of the first with a triple, a double, and a solo home run for a 3-1 lead. The Grizzlies wouldn't score again until a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth. Meanwhile, the Orediggers grinded out single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. Babcock's solo home run came in the third. A passed ball allowed Andrews to score and tie the game, 3-3, in the fourth inning.
Canon Humphreys provided Mines a 4-3 lead after driving in Bilter in the fifth inning. Stacked zeroes on the scoreboard filled the sixth and seventh frames before the Orediggers struck again. Hummel led off the eighth with a ground-rule double. Moeck immediately plated him and made the score 5-3. The Adams State long ball in the ninth didn't faze Newby. He shrugged that off along with a single and worked three groundballs and clinched the win.
