SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team scored six runs in the first inning on Thursday on the way to a 9-7 victory against previously unbeaten Cal State San Marcos.
Jackson Woolwine fueled the winning effort on offense. He scored three runs on three hits including one double with two RBI.
Canon Humphreys was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Wayne Moeck,
Jackson Babcock, and
Mason Andrews recorded one hit each. Andrews' knock happened to be a home run. Moeck tallied two RBI.
Tyler Pina scored twice after being hit twice and walking once. Babcock,
Trent Nielsen, and
Evan Bilter all came across the plate as well. Rounding out the highlights on offense were stolen bases for Humphreys, Moeck, Andrews, and Pina each stole one base.
Alex Honeyman (1-1) was the starting pitcher for the visitors. He earned the win after providing 5.2 innings of work which resulted in four runs on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Seaver Newby (1) recorded the save thanks to 2.1 innings of relief. He surrendered two runs on one hit and walked one.
Will Niles,
Sam Monk, and
Nicholas Spidel all came out of the bullpen. Home starter Jordan Townley (0-1) took the loss.
Mines (2-3) handed Cal State San Marcos (4-1) its first loss of the season in their only scheduled meeting in 2025. The Orediggers only hit .229, but their pitching staff and defense limited the Cougars to a .182 batting average. Three hits for extra bases, five walks, and four stolen bags helped the visitors offset 12 strikeouts at the plate. Mines also defied the odds stacked by three fielding errors. The CSUSM defense committed just one error and the Cougar hitters drew six walks. In the end, generating more hits gave the Orediggers the edge in the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mason Andrews was the second batter of the game. He hammered a solo home run to straightaway center field, and Mines did not look back. Andrews' resounding shot sparked a six-run first inning which included a two-run single from Woolwine, a two-run single from Moeck, and a one-run error by CSUSM. The Orediggers owned a 6-0 lead before Honeyman ever toed the rubber. When he did, the Cougars worked out one run in the first inning, one run in the third inning, and two in sixth. However, a Woolwine double in the fifth set up two more runs for Mines which kept Cal State San Marcos from truly threatening the lead. Exchanged runs in the seventh were academic. The home team did make some folks pucker with a one-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth. But Newby handled business by working a fly-out and a groundball.
