SAN DIEGO – After waiting two hours for coastal fog to clear on Friday, the Colorado School of Mines Baseball team suffered a 14-4 loss to #5 Point Loma. The game was called after eight full innings due to darkness.
Mason Andrews hit a home run for the Orediggers (2-4), and
Canon Humphreys was 3-for-3 at the plate. Those were Mines' highlights on offense.
Gray St. Amant (0-2) was the starting pitcher and took the loss due to eight runs (seven earned) on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Nick Lacson,
Cade Burghardt, and
Jackson Kay came out of the bullpen. Kay turned in a 0.00 ERA after 1.1 innings of relief. Ray Cebulski (1-0) was the winning pitcher for Point Loma (2-2). The Sea Lions overwhelmed Mines by hitting .375 and slugging .688. The Orediggers batted .172 and only had one hit for extra bases. Their pitching staff walked six and struck out for. The PLNU arms combined for two walks and nine strikeouts. There were two errors committed by each team.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A scoreless first frame led to a devastating second inning for the Orediggers. Point Loma used a grand slam and a two-run home run to take a 6-0 lead. Mines managed single runs in the third and fourth thanks to Moeck, Dunagan, Babcock, and Bilter. Andrews attempted to breathe life into his offense by smacking a two-run bomb in the fifth. However, the Sea Lions responded with five unanswered runs. As the game rolled past the seventh inning, both teams were just looking for reps before darkness. The final call was made after the eighth inning was complete. That decision allowed Branden Jackel to earn the save for Point Loma.
