ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team dropped both sides of its Sunday twin bill at Adams State on Saturday. A late rally gave ASU a 6-4 win in game one. Four Oredigger errors handed the Grizzlies game two, 7-2.
Despite the two losses,
Jackson Woolwine still accumulated four hits including a double while stealing two bases on the day. Humphreys smashed a triple as part of a three-hit performance in game one as well.
Evan Bilter hit a home run and
Mason Andrews turned in a two-hit day to round out the offensive highlights.
Will Niles and
Cade Burghardt were the starters on the mound. Niles did not factor in his decision after going 5.0 inning with two runs (one earned) on six hits. He struck out six and walked two. Burghardt (0-1) took the loss due to four runs (two earned) on one hit.
Seaver Newby (3-1) was the other pitcher of decision after giving up the game-one lead in relief.
Sam Monk,
Jackson Kay,
Grant Reising, and
Luke Parker also came out of the bullpen.
Murray and Marek were the winning pitchers for Adams State (7-15, 3-1 RMAC). Watkins continued his punishment of Mines (6-15, 1-3 RMAC) by accumulating four hits including a triple and a home run. The Grizzlies committed one fielding error in each game. The Oregdiggers totaled six on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A pitchers' duel started the day. Both teams carried a shutout into the fourth inning despite seven hits sprinkled across the first three frames. Then, Humphreys started the fourth with a triple, and an Andrews' single drove him in. An error also allowed Andrews to come across the plate and afford the Orediggers a 2-0 lead. Bilter's one-out, solo home run in the fifth pushed that margin to 3-0 before Adams State cracked the scoreboard by scoring two in the home half of the fifth inning. A two-out, RBI single for Woolwine in the sixth frame appeared to be insurance for Mines. However, the Grizzlies exploded for four runs in the very next inning and the Orediggers had no answer. Humphrey's single in the visitors' last chance was their only sign of life as ASU closed out the 6-4, comeback victory.
After the heartbreak in game one of the day and game three of the series, Mines seemingly carried a hangover into the series finale. The Grizzlies quickly made it 6-0 by plating three in the first, one in the second and two in the third. Another run in the fifth inning provided ASU a 7-0 lead. Adams State starting pitcher carried his no-hit bid all the way to the sixth inning. Woolwine finally ended the no-non by smacking a leadoff single. That eventually broke up the shutout as he scored on a Pina groundball.
Alex Dunagan added a pinch-hit double in the final frame to make it a two-run, two-hit game instead of a no-hit shutout.
