WEATHER FORECAST
For what seems like the first time this season, the forecast in Golden looks immaculate for baseball. Friday's outlook features sunny skies and a high of 75 with only a light breeze. However, as the sun drops behind the mountains, temps will cool. Saturday's high could approach 80 degrees but clouds will come and go with a high chance for wind. Sunday looks to be right around 70 degrees with partly cloudy skies and a light breeze. Sun screen is the call along with a light top layer for wind or clouds.
LAST TIME OUT
The Orediggers traveled to Pueblo, Colo., last Saturday, Sunday, and Monday for a RMAC series against the ThunderWolves of CSU Pueblo. After dropping the opener, 11-6, Mines won the first game of Sunday's double header by a 12-6 margin. Narrow losses of 8-5 and 4-2 closed the trip for the Orediggers and gave CSU Pueblo the series win. For the weekend,
Tyler Pina hit .583 with four runs on seven hits including two doubles and one home run with five RBI.
Jackson Babcock also scored four runs and hit two doubles and one triple.
Jackson Woolwine hit three doubles and scored three runs.
Evan Bilter and
Mason Andrews collected four RBI apiece. A 2-for-2 game from
Ben Leiphart and two stolen bases for Woolwine capped the highlights on offense.
Jackson Kay,
Grady Booth,
Will Niles, and
Alex Honeyman were the starting pitchers.
Seaver Newby claimed the lone win. Kay, Niles, and Honeyman took the losses. Luke Parks' 4.0 innings of two-hit, shutout relief with four strikeouts were the highlight on the mound. Also notable was
Matthew Dobberthien who tossed 3.0 innings of four-hit, shutout baseball.
SCOUTING REGIS
Regis enters the weekend touting a record of 23-11 while sitting second in the RMAC standings with a league record of 13-3. Those numbers have the Rangers receiving votes in the national coaches' poll. A finale win at CSU Pueblo followed by a sweep of Colorado Christian puts RU's win streak at five as the Rangers head over to Golden. Their sweep of CCU included margins of 11-1, 5-2, 14-1, and 16-8. Individually, Regis touts plenty of quality bats, but the biggest belongs to Adam Paniagua. He's hitting .440 with 52 runs on 59 hits including 14 doubles, one triple, and 21 home runs with 73 RBI. Also notable is Peter Goldy's .429 average, Clayton Conn's 49 runs scored, and Jack Moulin's 10 doubles, nine home runs and 45 RBI. The Rangers' pitching rotation nis led by Ryan Garcia's 5-1 record. He also owns a 6.88 in eight starts and has struck out 22 in 34.0 innings of work. Aidan Brainard and Wyatt Zsidisin have combined for 64 strikeouts. Noah McCandless leads the bullpen with four saves. As a team, RU is batting .366 and boasts a combined ERA of 6.82.
OREDIGGERS AGAINST THE RANGERS
Dating back to 2009, Mines has defeated Regis 36 times while dropping 40 games to RU. Last year, the Orediggers and Rangers split the regular season series played in Denver before playing twice in the RMAC tournament. Regis won both tournament games by scores of 11-3 and 12-2 to end Mines' season. Across six meetings in 2024,
Mason Andrews and
Tyler Pina both hit two home runs while
I-Ly Hsue,
Luke Folsom,
Tyler Pina,
Evan Bilter, and
Trent Nielsen all went long for the Orediggers' as well.
Luke Folsom and
Marcus Lee were the winning pitchers. Regis currently owns a three-game win streak against the Orediggers.
BROTHERLY LOVE
The showdown between Mines and Regis will be a little more personal for Oredigger outfielder
Wayne Moeck as his younger brother Trevor is a pitcher for the Rangers. Wayne came to Mines in 2021 and has been a part of the program for the last five seasons. Trevor started his collegiate career at NCAA Division I Bradley (Illinois) before coming to Regis. So far this season, Wayne is hitting .330 with 18 runs on 30 hits including two doubles, two triples, and 25 RBI. On the mound, Trevor is 0-2 with 14.14 ERA in eight appearances. He's totaled five strikeouts and eight walks in 7.0 innings of relief. Opposing hitters are batting .429 off Trevor in 2025. The brothers did go head-to-head last season in the series finale between the Orediggers and Rangers. Trevor struck out Wayne on five pitches to end the eighth in a 17-8 victory for RU.
HISTORY FOR ANDREWS
Mason Andrews put his name at #1 in the program record book last weekend against CSU Pueblo. His three walks in the series pushed the redshirt senior to 87 walks in less than four full seasons at Mines. That number surpasses the previous program record of 84 held by Kyle Wallace (2010-13). Additionally, Andrews is #2 in all-time runs at Mines with 184. He's also tied for #10 in career doubles with 43, #2 in all-time home runs with 43, #4 in career RBI with 156, and #4 in all-time total bases as an Oredigger.
JACKSON WOOLWINE
The Oredigger outfielder from Boulder, Colo., is in his third active year with Mines and has already etched his name in the record book multiple times. Most notable is Woolwine's climb up multiple career lists. He's tied for #5 in career runs with 158, ranks #5 in all-time doubles with 52, tied for #2 in career walks with 84, and alone at #4 in career stolen bases with 56. Additionally, on the single-season stolen bases list, Woolwine ranks #5 with 23 on 25 attempts.
ONE SEASON, TWO CYLCES
Two different Orediggers have hit for the cycle in 2025. For those who don't know, hitting for the cycle in baseball involves an individual recording at least one single, one double, one triple, and one home run in the same game.
Jackson Babcock did it first in a non-conference game against Adams State in Colorado Springs. He became the first Mines player to hit for the cycle since Adam Houghtaling did it at Colorado Christian in 2023. Houghtaling actually hit for the cycle twice in his career with the first occurrence coming at UCCS in 2022. Babcock started his quest with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. He notched his triple as the leadoff man in the second inning. The third baseman homered again in the fourth. It was a grand slam – his second of the season. Babcock recorded his single in the sixth inning and then doubled in the eighth inning just before the game was ended due to darkness. Overall, the League City, Texas, native finished the game 5-for-5 with five runs and six RBI. He reached base in all six plate appearances. Additionally, Babcock's five runs tied the program's single-game record.
Jackson Woolwine hit for the cycle at home against New Mexico Highlands. His cycle featured a double in the first inning, a groundball RBI in the second inning, a single in the third inning, a home run in the fifth inning, and a triple in the sixth inning. Woolwine hit the milestone (pun intended) in a game scheduled for seven innings where Mines only batted six times.
IN THE PROS
Over the last seven years, three Orediggers have entered baseball's professional ranks. Mikey Gangwish (2016-19) was the first as he played professionally in Australia before returning to a contract with the Evansville Otters of the independent Frontier League. He has since retired and earned his master's degree at Mines. The second was Trevor Kehe (2017-19) who was drafted in the 36th round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Baltimore Orioles. He worked in the Orioles organization for three years and advanced as far as High-A ball with the Aberdeen IronBirds before retiring. Rounding out but leading the trio is Walter Pennington (2017-20).
WALTER PENNINGTON
Walter Pennington had a milestone season in 2024. After spending 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 in the Kansas City Royals minor league system, the former Oredigger left-handed pitcher broke into the big leagues. He made his MLB debut with the Royals against the Rockies at Coors Field, just miles from his childhood home. That appearance made the Broomfield, Colo., native just the second Mines player to ever make the big leagues and the first in over a century. Eventually, Pennington was traded to the Texas Rangers for known-veteran Michael Lorenzen. Pennington moved between triple-A Round Rock and the Rangers' big-league club. For the year, the lefty's big-league resume featured a 1-0 record with a 3.00 ERA in 16 games and one start. He struck out 17 and walked 11 across 18.0 innings of work. For his career in the minor leagues, Pennington is 23-11 with a 3.49 ERA in 149 appearances and four starts. He also boasts 10 saves and 258 strikeouts with 245.0 innings under his belt. To round it all out, Pennington was named to the International League (AAA) All-Star team. More to come on Pennington as the season progresses.
THE SKIPPER
The 2025 campaign marks Mines' seventh season with
Robby Bales as head coach. During his tenure as the Oredigger skipper, Bales holds an overall record of 157-132 with a mark of 101-86 in RMAC play. He has coached his players to 26 All-RMAC awards, 19 all-region awards, eight all-America nods, seven CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, one MLB Draft Pick and had one player signed as a free agent in the MLB. Furthermore, Bales touts two RMAC Pitchers of the Year during his time at the helm including RMAC Pitcher of the Year, NCBWA South Central Region Pitcher of the Year, D2CCA South Central Region Pitcher of the Year and the RMAC's all-time wins leader in Tyler Blomster. Additionally, Bales has guided Mines to the NCAA Tournament once, and RMAC Tournament four times, advancing to the regional and conference tournament final in 2019. Bales' teams have also performed in the classroom as the squad brought home the RMAC Brechler Award in 2020, 2021, and 2023 as the team boasting the highest combined GPA in the conference.
