PUEBLO, Colo. - Two big innings early in the game put CSU Pueblo out to a lead that Colorado School of Mines couldn't overcome as the Thunderwolves took the series opener 11-6 on Saturday.
Mason Andrews became Mines' all-time leader in walks during the game while
Tyler Pina led the Oredigger (10-24, 5-12 RMAC) at the plate going 3-for-5 with a pair of runs batted in, with
Tyler Hummel,
Evan Bilter, Andrews, and
Alex Dunagan also driving runs across.
Jackson Babcock and
Canon Humphreys each scored two runs.
Andrews' walk off a full count in the ninth was the 85th of his career, surpassing Kyle Wallace (2010-13) for the program all-time lead.
Travis Farrell (7-1) departed in the seventh inning after fanning six and allowing four runs off eight hits.
Jackson Kay (0-1), in his second start of the season, allowed seven runs off eight hits in two innings for the Orediggers.
Nicholas Spidel and
Matthew Dobberthien each threw three innings of relief with Dobberthien not allowing a run in his stint.
Wyatt Reginato and Elijah Borjas put together three-hit games for the Pack (18-13, 8-5 RMAC) as they had eight different players record an RBI in the game.
Mines struck first in the game when Pina doubled home Babcock in the second, but CSUP responded with four runs in the bottom half keyed by Devean Alvarez's two-run single. The lead extended with six runs in the third with the rally starting on Joseph Quintana's triple, putting Mines behind 10-1.
The Orediggers chipped away from there as Dobberthien's relief stretch settled the game down. Mines scored a run in the fourth with Andrews' groundout plating Babcock, then tacked on single scores in each of their last four at-bats with Pina singling in Humphreys in the sixth, Bilter's sacrifice fly in the seventh bringing in
Wayne Moeck, Hummel singling home Dunagan in the eighth, and Dunagan pushing Humphreys across in the ninth.
Mines and CSU Pueblo continue their series Sunday with a noon doubleheader.
