PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team kept CSU Pueblo off the scoreboard for six consecutive innings in Monday's series finale, but the ThunderWolves still emerged with a 4-2 win and a series victory.
Ben Leiphart fueled the Mines (11-26, 6-14 RMAC) offense with his 2-for-2 day. One double helped Leiphart score once and drive in another run.
Wayne Moeck also scored for the Orediggers.
Jackson Babcock,
Tyler Pina,
Mason Andrews, and Moeck all recorded base hits as well. Pina also walked once, and
Jackson Woolwine stole two bases.
Alex Honeyman (1-4) was Mines' starter on the mound and the pitcher of decision. He surrendered four runs (one earned) on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Luke Parker finished the game for the Orediggers, churning out 4.0 innings of two-hit shutout baseball. Parker struck out four and walked four. Jacob Petersheim (3-1) earned the win for CSU Pueblo (20-14, 10-6 RMAC) and Jack Novack (3) claimed the save.
As a team, Mines scored its two runs on six hits including one double. CSU Pueblo notched six hits en route to its four runs. The ThunderWolves worked around three errors in the field while the Orediggers had two errors. Slugging killed the visitors as CSU Pueblo notched two doubles, one triple, and two home runs. Overall, the home pitching staff struck out three, walked one, and hit three batters. Mines' arms struck out six, walked five, and hit zero batters.
HOW IT HAPPENED
All four of CSU Pueblo's runs came in the first two innings. A solo home run in the first gave the home team a 1-0 lead. An error and a two-run home run in the second brought "The Pack" to a 4-0 lead. Leiphart doubled in the third and plated Moeck. Leiphart eventually came around on what was scored an error by the centerfielder. An appeal for a change would change the play to a RBI double for
Evan Bilter. After the third frame, there were only stacked zeros on the scoreboard. Neither team came across the plate. After the final out, the Orediggers had stranded nine and CSU Pueblo left seven.
