THOMPSON EARNS RMAC HONOR
Cody Thompson's unbeaten run at the Jack Hancock Duals earned him the latest RMAC Wrestler of the Week award back on Dec. 22. Thompson pinned #12 Walker Bents of Minnesota State to highlight his day and also picked up a key win against #17 Central Missouri to help Mines win in a tiebreaker. It is the second career RMAC honor for Thompson, who is 7-0 this season and ranked #2 at 149 pounds by both the NWCA and OpenMat.
IN THE RANKINGS
Both Mines and Chadron State appear in the latest NWCA rankings out in mid-December with the Eagles ranked #15 and Mines tied for #21 in the team tournament standings. The teams have four ranked individuals between them with #2
Cody Thompson (149) for the Orediggers and #6 Quade Smith (125), #8 Caleb Chaves (141), and #3 Keegan Gehlhausen (184) for CSC. Other Oredigger individuals appearing in this week's OpenMat rankings include #14
Jakob Smith at 174, #17
Wyatt Reisz at 184, and #19
Laith Ibrahim at 285.
THE HISTORY
Mines and Chadron State have a long wrestling history going back to 1962, with CSC holding an all-time series lead of 25-13-2 including 11-6-1 in the Nebraska panhandle. Mines, however, has won six of their last seven meetings including a 21-13 victory in Golden last year.Â
THE CHAMPS ARE HERE
The Orediggers won the outright RMAC championship in 2024-25 with a perfect 7-0 RMAC dual schedule. It marks the third title for the Orediggers, all coming since 2019 under RMAC Coach of the Year
Austin DeVoe. Mines was well-rewarded for their title win in the RMAC's postseason honors, as
Jakob Smith earned First-Team All-RMAC honors at 165 pounds while four Orediggers took Second-Team All-RMAC accolades:
Christian Lopez (125 lbs.),
Grayston DiBlasi (141 lbs.),
Wyatt Reisz (174 lbs.), and
Ryan Cody (197 lbs.) in addition to DeVoe's major award.
LEADING THE WAY
Cody Thompson enters the weekend as Mines' active leader in career wins at 55-17, while
Wyatt Reisz, who ended his sophomore year in his first NCAA Championships appearance, is 48-16.
Marcus Caro leads the team in wins this season at 11-7 with
Deringer Hollenbeck right behind at 10-6. Hollenbeck's six falls are the most on the team, while Thompson leads the Orediggers in dual points scored with 31 followed by
Jakob Smith's 27.
DIBLASI EARNS COMMENCEMENT HONOR
Former Oredigger captain and current assistant coach
Grayston DiBlasi walked across the commencement stage for a second time on Dec. 19, earning his master's degree in mechanical engineering. DiBlasi was selected as the President's Senior Scholar-Athlete for his graduating class, an award given to the most outstanding graduate for both their academic and athletic achievement. A two-time Academic All-American and NCAA qualifier in his career, DiBlasi won 95 bouts to rank third all-time in wins at Mines. He won the 2023 NCAA Elite 90 award for the top GPA at the NCAA Championships, and was a three-time RMAC Academic Wrestler of the Year. His career winning percentage of 77.2% ranks fourth all-time at Mines, and he is fifth in pins with 27. DiBlasi captained Mines' 2025 RMAC championship team.
